Start making your plans now for the annual New years day dive at Mermet. Oddly enough, this will take place on...you guessed it...New Years day. I know I plan on being there, and I am fairly confident theskull will be there as well. Another good reason to go that day, is you get those annual waivers done for the year.
Mark your calenders now, and lets have a good time and kick off the new year the right way!!!!!

I have my usual New Years Eve/Day plan. To be in an underwater cave when the clock strikes midnight, in N Florida.

I was there last year and had a ball. A tv crew was taping us and everything.
However, if someone offers me BIG BUCKS to play on New Year's Eve, I'm taking the money.
More dough

Sounds great - I have wanted to do a New Years Day dive since I started diving. I need to figure out just where Mermet is. Maybe Santa will bring the drysuit I want :)

Mermet would ba a quite a haul from Kansas unless you have some ruby slippers. It's at the very bottom of Illinois across the river from Paducah, KY.

I'll probably be Downtown St. Louis at the Westin. So no DUI for me.... Wine, Woman and dancing... Better then diving???? Maybe not.... But gotta be fully rounded...LOL...
Anyone wanna go deep in Oronogo? In November?

Hmmm - that does sound like fun...but...
We usually do a New Years Eve party at one place and a New Years Day party at our LDS - don't know if hubby would be willing to break tradition or not.
Probably not. :)

Simple is fine. I'm bringing my anchovies in a can so as not to offend those with delicate sensibilities about them. I don't want to hear them whine (you know who you are).
Seriously, if we do plan on pizza, actually finding a place that's open around there on New Year's Day might be a challenge. I'll be down at Mermet for Halloween and will ask Glen and his crew for advice. Something like Papa Murphy's might be an option.
I'll also reserve a pavillion. James, get that banner ready to travel!

The only outcome I could see to such an action would be to invite rules that we all want to avoid.

Not to worry everyone. Not everyone can be in the water on a NY Eve. I guess I and The Skull along with a few others will get plenty of time in to blow a few bubbles for thoses of you who can't make it. That is if you do not mind them be under tons of rock at the same time. If you don't like that then I guess I wont blow bubbles for you then.

Though I won't be there New Year's Day, I thought I would report conditions for those folks planning on going. We dived Mermet yesterday, 12/16, surface temp 50*, 20' platforms 49*. The thermocline at 40' has, kinda, faded away; it just gradually gets colder till you hit 42*. Vis is very good, 20-30' about anywhere you go.
We'll probably dive a couple more times before New Years, I'll continue to report conditions if anyone is interested.

Conditions are great. Surface temp 48*, platforms 47*, bottom 42*. Vis is 30-40 just about anywhere. The wall that runs east and west across the quarry has some of the best vis I have ever seen at Mermet, probably 50'. There are few cloudy areas near the bottom in the deep water. Should be a good day.

Thats about it. We was told that if you dive doubles, you have to pay mopre and sign an additional waiver. If you night dive, someone in the group has to be insured, and that takes another waiver...just seems like a big hassle, and after doing 2 dives there, I only remember seeing a few fish at the surface, nothing else at bottom. Hopefully you have better luck than I did. I too, drove about 6 hours.
Time to pack up for Mermet, meeting my buddy at 6 AM to head down there.

Hope that everyones dives were fun. The two that we did at Blue Springs were great. not much to see but we could see for ever (ok it seemed like it). Viz was at least 25-30', temp was 41 (no termocline) and other than frozen hands we had a good time. I could have gone for some sun shine to make it better but all in all it was a good day.
Happy New Year everyone.

I was getting 48 degrees from top to bottom at Mermet. I havent been feeling to well, and neither has by dive buddy, so we just went down and did one dive, and called it a day. We dropped down on the school bus, then down to the 65 foot platform. Over to the pickup, then the small plane, boxcar and then the traditinal swimthorugh of the 727. From there, we hooked a right and followed that wall over to the little swim through by the 7 foot platform way over in the corner. I had never been over there before, it was different. I guess for me the best part of the dive was along that wall, we saw 3 turtles hanging out. That was pretty cool. We was getting out right when the news crews was there to film everybody jumping in. We walked over to take in the festivities. The funniest part about that was a guy was in a hurry to get over there for the party, and it was only when he did his giant stride and hit the water did he realize he didnt have his dry suit zipped up at all. He let out a pretty cool yell, and the TV crew caught it on tape. I dont know what station that was, but I was interviewed as well. The place was pretty crowded for a winter day. As usual, the staff was excellent. My release forms are now signed, so I am good for the 2006 year. I hope to be back many many times.

How was Oronogo? I figured it would be to cold to get out today - but I had 70 degress around 3pm! Can't believe I missed a New Years Day dive again.
You are right about the appearance, (it is the Ozarks)- I was by there once but a Labor Day thunderstorm rolled in and we stayed in the motel for 2 days.
So glad to hear some of us got out for a dive today - 2006 is going to be better for me (or my hubby Terry - no relation to Wkndbum) is going to know about it.

Did 2 dives, first one to the plane then dropped over the ledge to the computer/desk (yea, WOW!) @ 118'. Second dive went back to the plane, over to the "auto graveyard" (junk yard) & then over to the Bell. Vis was 5' to 12'.
Water temp was 46, air temp @ 3pm was 76, unbeleivable for Jan 1 in the Midwest.
Looked like about 30 + divers there but not crowded at all. Saw a few Kansas plated vehicles, couple of Okla, lots of MO & one NEBR (ya, me)
Would I dive it again? Wouldn't drive that far to dive it but If I were in the neighborhood, maybe. Just too much JUNK in the water (only saw one fish)
Good diving with Dr Robb & Cumming66
