Hi and welcome to MidW Dive. A Friday dive sounds good here but a little to far away. Let us know what you thought of Big Blue.

Welcome Jeremy! Have to work on Friday, unfortunately, but would love to hear about the diving at Big Blue. Haven't made it over there yet.

Welcome to MWD! :)

I am ditching work this Friday to dive Big Blue in Mason City, IA...is there anyone living in that area or in Des Moines(where I live) that would want to buddy up sometime????I get the occasional Friday off, just not *this* one. But I'd love to hear about Big Blue. I'm about three or three-and-a-half hours from Mason City and wouldn't driving up to dive before the snow flies (did I say that out loud?).

Welcome Jeremy. Other than classes I think I'm though for the year...I have a major $$$ item coming up next year that is hampering my dive plans. Please let us know about Big Blue though. Any info you can add to our dive site database would be welcome!

Did 2 dives in Big Blue today! Weather was a sunny 70 F and the water was 66 F until you reached the thermocline at about 25 ft then it dropped to about 50 F

15-20 ft visability with tons of Striped Bass, Northern Pike, Catfish and Bluegills. Checked out a 19 ft. sailboat that rests at about 35 ft near the center of the lake.

Great dive for Iowa standards anyway!

Have a good weekend!!!!!

Thanks for the info, 15-20 ft. visibility sounds pretty good. Did you dive dry or wet?

Jeremy-

Glad to hear that you had a good time in Big Blue.

For the longest time I dove Clearwater and other spots near Des Moines there with the GREAT visibility of about 2 feet at the most! I got so sick of this.

Finally I listened to Kevin (at Iowa State Skin Diving School [ISSDS] in West Des Moines) and drove up to Mason City here a month ago to take a quick dip in Big Blue. Man was it great for Iowa diving. Water temp acording to my computer was 68F And vis was about 20 feet too, but I got so busy chasing Blue Gills in the shallows that I didn't really get to venture down past 17 feet until I noticed that my tank read 700 PSI. Time to go. But I must say that that place is a great find.

Am planning on heading there a week from Monday to take another quick dip.

We will have to dive sometime. I get to Des Moines quite often, and will probably be moving there in the next year or so.

Regards!
Chris

Chris-

Get me your contact information so we can keep in touch....it is hard to find divers with a flexible schedule to go diving during the week. There is a slight chance I may even be able to meet up with you for Big Blue on the 26th. My e-mail address is jeremy@yoder.net.

Hi Jeremy,

Welcome to the board. Just been here a couple of weeks myself. Have only been to Big Blue once but had some great dives. I live about 50 east of DsM.

Jeremy-

Sorry for not writing earlier, but I have been swamped with work......but I plan on getting to Mason City to dive about 10-11 in the morning. I have a meeting back here in Sioux Falls at 5:00 that I will need to get back to town and shower and such for. Just let me know if you plan on coming up and I will try to wait for you. I usually enter on the beach by the fishing dock.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Chris

I should say that I plan on diving right now, but with gas prices starting to climb back up again, I might have to re-think it. :-)
