OKay, these are now officially out of control. Its been a long running joke, but now, I am just about to the point where I cant afford to go to work. I am alread canceling all dive trips that I have planned with the exception of this weekend and maybe my Thanksgiving trip to Florida. I just cant afford to go anywhere at 3 bucks a gallon.

It's up to $3.19 in Springfield, and I've heard of higher prices and rationing in some small towns. I'll bet the big oil companies are still making out like bandits, though.

I was going to go to Oklahoma this weekend to visit some old friends, but it would be around $150 just in gas! I'm going to have to get a raise just to afford to go to work. I have even been thinking about buying a motorcycle.

Saw $3.19 at lunch today in Omaha, up from $2.79 when I drove to work this morning, and $2.59 last night. :(

I "stole" gas Monday night for 2.38. Yesterday, it was up to 2.79 and today when I came home, it was 2.99, and this is all for the cheap stuff. I wish I worked by the river, I would just put on my dry suit, and swim to work.

I'm thankful that I have a house and a job to go to. I expect a lot of people down South would trade places with any of us. The emergence of China as a consumer of raw materials is and will continue to drive commodity prices. We can only shop at Wal Mart for so long until we have to pay the price one way or another. That being said, the oil companies appear to be taking unfair advantage evidenced by their profit reports.

That's all too true. And don't forget the employment situation. Remember what Ross Perot said about "that sucking sound"?

I was stationed in Grand Forks, ND when gas hit th $1.30 mark and had a tough time swallowing that...this is just nuts!
But to put it into perspective, the US still has cheaper gas prices than many other places in the world.

In all seriousness I wish people would keep political comments off of this board. Griping about the gas is one thing, but adding political comentary just sucks. There are several boards out there for politics. very few for midwest diving. Sorry if I am p1ssing anyone off, I'll be glad to leave if people want to make this into a political commentary board.

Just a bit of information. The Oil Companies do not set the price of a barrel of oil. The Oil Companies are like the grave yards and the farmers they take what they are given. Otherwise the price of a barrel of oil in the 80's would not have been $8.00 or $12.00 in the 90's. Look to Wallstreet, the speculators and foreign demand for the reason for the price. The Oil Companies are not getting the price shown on CNBC for their barrels of oil.

We have several stations shut down because they are dry. I to will be doing less driving after this weekends plans. If it wasn't for several others banking on me being there this weekend I would opt out. I guess I am lucky and have been able to put E-85 ($2.85 instead of $3.29) in the tank. The truck doesn't get as great gas mileage if I burn it straight but works wonders about half and half with regular.
Just keep in mind that the stations only make $.05 a gallon no matter what the price...LOL I just love that one.

If you want to talk about midwest diving, why on earth would you even be looking at a thread in a "Non-Diving Related" forum? I think the purpose of a "Non-Diving Related" forum is to discuss things that are "Non-Diving Related".

I hope I'm misunderstanding some things here, but it seems like the seeds of a "PC" atmosphere are being sown here.
I hate to see that happen. That's why I'm fed up with scubaboard: you can't voice your opinion or say something controversial unless it's PC without getting flamed, unless you preface it with lots of apologies first.
My suggestion, take it or leave it: let's let people say what they want to say (within the boundariess of good taste, right?????)
It's just like TV: if you don't like it, change the channel and/or thread.
Let's not start censoring each other purely because we don't necessarily like what's being said. Nobody said life would be perfect, did they???

It is $3.05 here and I can see the lights of the refinery out my front window. Ok, the producers aren't making any money, the refineries aren't, the wholesalers aren't and the retailers are just barely getting by......where is the money going?
The largest gasoline retailer in Amarillo Texas was quoted on a local radio station saying something to the effect that the only people who are complaining are those that that don't have enough ambition to get a good job. Not a direct quote just the gist of it. It seems he is suffering today from a bit of a backlash.

It's still $3.19 here...it pegged the price meter right away and hasn't budged yet. I've had a 200 gallon fuel barrel stored for a few years along with an old gas station pump. Needless to say, I hooked them up this weekend. The way I figure it if the price does continue to climb I might be able to save a few bucks although 200 gallons of gas all on one bill will be hard to swallow.

Gas dropped to $2.89 yesterday. The totally stupid thing is that the E85 which contains little or no oil has risen to the same price as regular gas. Of course keep in mind that the gas stations aren't making but $.05 on the dollar no matter what price gas is...yah right.

My husband owned a station in the 70's and 80's a Mom & Pop type station he tried to keep the price at a dime over our cost. We usually paid more than the chain type stores were selling it for because of the storage . In the past some of the chains have been know to sell gas for less than they buy it for to get you in for the pop, beer, bread etc which is a lot more than the grocery stores.

E-85 has been at least 40-50 cents cheaper in the past. Anything that burns gas can burn E-85. The only problem can be that you don't get as good of gas mileage so the savings does no good. Check your owners manual as to if your car can run on it. It is mostly newer cars. Even though my 99 truck doesn't say that it will run on it I do put some in to help with the savings. This hasn't affected the way that it runs and my mechanic says that it shouldn't do any harm to the engine. Personally I think it runs a bit better. Here is a link for E-85. (http://keyword.netscape.com/ns/boomframe.jsp?query=e-85&page=1&offset=0&result_url=redir%3Fsrc%3Dwebsearch%26requestId%3D5 e33ebc58a927a23%26clickedItemRank%3D1%26userQuery% 3De-85%26clickedItemURN%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.e85fu el.com%252F%26invocationType%3D-%26fromPage%3DnsBrowserRoll%26amp%3BampTest%3D1&remove_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.e85fuel.com%2F)I do stand corrected, E-85 has 15% regular gas in it.
