No shame there. Makes you appreciate this site that much more.
Kinda like diving in Rolla for a weekend, and then going to the Carribean!

Guilty!
and then I always ask myself, why, why, why?
The only thing I usually start off going there for is the Instructor to Instructor forum. I feel relatively safe in there and it is a good resource at times. Then I think, while I'm here I may as well look around a little. Then I can't keep my opinions/thoughts to myself. Damn, I hate that!

If we had a little more action on this board, I wouldn't go over there at all. Let's all PITCH IN.

When I started this thread, it was started tongue in cheek, or finger in palm, since I typed it. Anybody that knows me knows I am all about having fun and having a good time. I use these boards as a source of information, and to meet other people, get information about dive sites, etc. Any SB bashing I do is only because I think its really childish to the level of censorship over there, and my bashing is done in a mocking manor of them.
juls64

I have several problems with ScubaBoard. I will try to mention as many as I can in 3 minutes:
Official Greeters - someone new asks a question. There are 5 balloon filled, obnoxious, billboard type welcomes, but no one answers the guys question.
Moderators, Supervisiors, etc.- Someone joins SB, is a member for 3 months, posts like 2000 things and boom, they then have a title.....
BP/Wing- if I buy one, I can solve world hunger, prevent World War 3, and locate Jimmy Hoffa's remains.....not to mention it will make me a great diver! ( I am not anti-BP/Wing by the way, I just don't think BCD's are bad,)
Squashing New Divers Aspirations- whenever a new diver asks about becoming a divemaster, it becomes an agency bashing of how PADI only requires 20 dives to start the program. I have gotten involved in a few of the debates lately and it has left me feeling "dirty". That is why Bob's initial post caught my attention.
It is just too much of a chore to wade through everything there. The old saying about take what you want and leave the rest. There is just too much being left these days.
Now for balance I'd like to add some good things about SB
-I met tons of great people! I even have gone diving with some.
-I was exposed to many new ideas, like BP/Wings and DIR. It made me go out and read and get information so I could make informed decisions on the type of diving that would be best for me.
-I read so many posts about poor bouyancy, that it made me work extra hard on my own. I have been complimented on having good bouyancy, but if I had not read so many slams, I may not have been so driven to get it down.
-I enjoy the perspectives of people from all over the world
- I have learned far more than I could ever imagine about various manufacturers, equipment types, etc, so I feel I have made some more educated purchases, than perhaps I otherwise may have made.
OK, my 3 minutes are up!

Bob for a "tongue in cheek" thread (which was the way my post was intended also) I really think some good discussion and info has come from it. Being SB member #37 I have seen a lot of changes there and most have chased me away from there, a very big THANK YOU James for putting this Board together. A lot of the time this is my Rx when I am not in the water.

LOL...I noticed a lot of aliases here on Midwest that I sent Midwest Muck Diver shirt to. The funny part was that I offered them again this year and sold one, gave away one and traded one. BTW, I miss you guys posting on SB.
Since I have only been diving for about a year and a half I learned a lot from SB that I probably wouldn't have known about. I guess if you let it get to you then it will. All points mentioned by others are dead on, I love Juls comment. I am glad to see that I am right about some. Andy is a preacher?? Explains a lot. Uncle Pug, won't even go there.
I have met a lot of people off of SB and if it wasn't for them I think I would be dry for the most part. BTW, a group of us are getting together over Labor day weekend at Blue Springs, everyone is welcome.
I do agree that if there was more action here I would drop in more often. For the most part I log in about twice a month, maybe a few times more recently. What to do about it....good question.

Well, if crass commercialization is too much there, maybe you could find it cheaper at Scuba Toys!Heh. Now THAT's funny. Thanks for an excellent chuckle.
Pete and his minions have done a tremendous job of growing the board from a little backwater in hyperspace to the 800lb gorilla it has become. I have issues with some of the strategic choices Pete is making and a couple of the people he is relying upon as advisors but, although few were as heavily invested as I found myself, I finally remembered two things: the only thing I had invested in the board was free time, so expecting a big return was pretty silly, and; it's supposed to be FUN. If it isn't, stop doing it.
So I did. I still check in over there and I still post from time to time, but it's been very liberating to surrender my moderator badge and to simplify my priorities to two: learn something and have fun.
As to picking on Andy or anyone over there, remember the axiom about wrestling with pigs: you're going to get as dirty as the pig, but the pig likes it. Andy likes to think of himself as the big boar in the sty, but... arghgh... must... resist... temptation... just... don't... say... anything.
Leaving ScubaBoard behind isn't easy and discussing it on this board isn't going to do much to smooth the path. Frankly, I'd encourage anyone with criticisms of the motherboard to post them over there where they might actually do some good and where they won't clutter up our new little home. Remember, "Don't stir up the silt." applies here as well as underwater. If you gotta make a mess, however, howzabout doing it in their yard and not here? ;)

Speaking of throwing off the curse of PC foolishness, Shepard Smith of Fox was conducting a live "man on the street" interview of some guy in New Orleans the day before Katrina hit, the conversation went like this: SHEPARD SMITH: You're live on FOX News Channel, what are you doing?
MAN: Walking my dogs.
SMITH: Why are you still here? I'm just curious.
MAN: None of your <expletive deleted> business.
MAN may well be crazy but you gotta love his answer. I think we should find the guy (assuming he survives the storm) and give him an award - especially since the comment made it past the blooper button.

Ahh - forget the PM -
OK - here goes - tell me, is this a dirty joke? Atlaua - please pull this if it offends you!
A man takes his little girl with him to get his hair cut. The child becomes bored while waiting, so Dad gives her some money and tells her to go next door to the drugstore and buy herself a treat.
The little girl comes back a short while later with a snack cake and stands next to her father, who is now getting his hair cut.
The barber looks down at her and says, "Watch out, honey, you're going to get hair all over your twinkie!"
She looks up at him and says, "I know, and I'm going to get boobies too."
Anyone offended? Jeeeeeeezzzzz.

Just to clear things up, and not pointing at anything in particular with regard to the policies here.
The rules of the board are that anyone 13 and over is welcome to join. Anyone under the age of 13 must have their parents permission to join. So the goal is to keep the conversation at a level that is "safe" for 13 year olds. Not that this is the same policy used on ScubaBoard, but the imlementation is likey to be different.
By the time a child becomes a teenager they are almost certainly aware of certain adult concepts, probably much more than their parents would like to think ;). That means that these subjects are not taboo, but should be handled carefully. When you want to say somthing ask yourself if you would say it to an 8th grade class.
So far, we have yet to need to pull anything for adult content. This is basicly because we have a good community here. Eventually we will get people who try to push the limits and will probably have to come clean up behind them. Obviously we'd all prefer that didn't happen but being a pessimist I'm sure that the time will come.
I know that some prefer a board where they can talk like adults and some would prefer a "G" board, making it impossilble to please all. I can tell you that I've seen both extremes and neither are all that much fun.
James
P.S. The official rules are posted in the TOS section of the FAQ:

So the board is PG-13..cool!
I would avoid that comparison. MPAA defines PG as "Parental Guidance Suggested" and PG-13 as "Parents Strongly Cautioned". The age to shoot for is 13, not 13 with parental guidance.
I would say, lets have a joke forum but then things could start to unravel.
That's not likely to happen. The joke forum on SB is a major cause of discontent. People get ticked when dirty jokes get pulled and other get ticked when they don't.
Plus 98% of the jokes there are not the least bit scuba related...

Well stated...I felt bad being the fun sponge earlier. Mostly because it was funny and I like to to laugh as much as anybody else. It just so happened at that particular moment I had a 12 year old over my shoulder....my hope is that most folks can appreciate the different perspective that brings to the table.

I started this thread with an apology, and I think I am going to end it with one as well. This thread has pushed the boundry of good taste a few times. The last thing we want to do here is watch over every single post that is made. This is a board for divers, by divers. With that being said, we do have younger divers who dont need to be seeing some of the things that are being said here, or in some cases, things that are being implied. These younger divers are the future of our sport. Lets not do anything to make diving, or this board, a bad experience for them, their parents or anyone else.
Thank you
