Well I thought I would post my first set of equipment.

Deep See- Quantum 7mm wetsuit
Safe sole 6.5mm boot
6/5 Titanium glove
Henderson- Hyperstrech 7/5 hood
Sea Quest- Pro QD BC
Aqua Lung- Falco Mask
Titan LX Supreme Reg
Calypso/Titan Octo
Tusa- Xpert Zoom Split Fins Adj.
Aeris- Atmos 2 wrist computer
Wrist compass
Suunto- Console SPG

I also have a slate. Can you guys think of any other gear I might need? I plan on diving mostly in the midwest with occational trips to Florida for recreational dives only. I would like to get into a dry suit at somepoint, although I am afraid I would have to buy a suit to take the class due to my size (I am a BIG boy).

Will need a couple lights and a knife, unless you dive where no fishing is allowed and plan to miss the very best dives--the night dives.

And perhaps a dive flag/float.

I forgot, I do have a float. I would be interested in some suggestions for a light & a knife though.

I just picked up a UK 8D main light and a Pelican 3C for a back up. Total cost for both lights and batts, was around $150.00 seems to work fine so far but only used them once. I am really not sure a knife is for me as I do most of my diving in a local quarry or Lake Michigan and have never needed one.

DSDO

PS I sometimes end up around Iowa City for work any good diving in the area?

As far as diving around Iowa City, early in the sping (about a week or so after the ice is gone) I have heard Pleasent Creek isn't too bad. I have never been there, this is my first year diving & I wasn't certified until June. The LDS says it's a waste of time during the summer.

Knife is for fishing line..... Which gets hung up on wrecks and other things of interest to divers.... Fish tend to congregate around wrecks. So fisherman congregate around them also.. And you can't see mono line underwater.... So you need a knife.... I like a UK Remora... Blunt tip so I don't poke myself.... And short...

Since I don't plan on night diving right away would I be better off just getting a smaller back-up light for now to look under rocks & such during the day & waiting on the primary? Also how do you guys keep your lights attached when you are not using them so they are not in the way?

I tie a bolt snap on to the end and hook it on my right sholder d-ring. The free end is secured with a piece of bicycle innertube. With a standard BC a pocket might be the best choice.

Primary on a retractor attached to a D-ring.
Backup in a drysuit pocket or in a BC pocket when I'm diving wet.

Same here. Works great and you don't have to worry about where it is.

Well I went to the LDS last night & ended up getting a Princeton Tec "Tec 40" light & the Wenoka knife by Deep See. I don't plan on night diving until next year so I have a while to figure out what kind of primary light to get.

Good choices.

You MUST start night diving. Not only is it very cool, but the fish behaviour is totally different from daylight.

I would think a finger spool with about 250ft with cave line, also a nice diving light. nothing big just a 4 c battery light. not led.

What's wrong with LED? My guess is in a few years there will be nothing but LED and HID. The new LED's have great output and burn time...halogen is quicly becoming extinct.

Good question James. One good thing is that most of the UK lights can be switched to LED without buying the whole light.

Night diving is a must in my book. My first was ok but the second one was about 1 1/2 hours long in fresh water and I couldn't believe everything that I saw.

I have 2 led lights and you can focuse the led it spreads the light out. with Halogen you can get a nice solid beem of light

The new LED's are much better than the first ones, which were crap. DiverBob has a really good one he showed me at Mermet a couple of weeks ago.
Oops, gotta go and jump into lake Michigan......

As to what gear you're going to need in the future, only time will tell, though a cheap set of EMT shears and a knife might be good safety gear to have. If you're like the rest of us, plan on adding bits and pieces forever as you discover that the "but, Honey, I really need a..." list ends up being pretty much endless. :o
