There are 2 Quail Run Quarries? That's where I'll be, except the one in MO.

That vis is 1000 times better than the vis at the MO Quail Run...that looks like an awesome place to train.
And to answer the initial question, I will be diving at Penny Royal on Saturday, and most likely Mermet on Sunday. I am on my way to the blue grass state here in about 90 minutes. (7 days until Roatan)

I'll be dry this weekend, too. Going cave diving in Cannonball Cave. Well, I guess my cheeks and finger tips will get wet, LOL. This dry weather has made for some fantastic local cave diving conditions! :)

Sorry you can't join us! I hate it when work interferes with diving. How long ago did you do your ow checkout dives? Just curious of the time of year, visibility, water temps, etc. We've never dove there, just wanted an idea of what to expect. Thanks!

My OW checkouts were last summer. :)
The water gets cold at the thermocline like you'd expect -- I think it was 55° at 20' last fall when we pulled in the platform and beached the dock for the winter. Don has updated conditions on his main webpage (http://www.scubauww.com), it says currently 62° at 25' which sounds about right, definitely 7mm conditions.
Vis varies from good to poor, based on when the quarry "turns over" and when the last group of OW students kicked up the bottom (esp between the dock and the dive platform). Nothing a muck diver can't handle. ;)
It really is the only game in town though, unless you want to drive to Beaver Lake, AR or Table Rock, which have better conditions (and more space and better access!) but take up a whole weekend with the drive down and back. The gravel road down to Quail Run from the county road could use some, er.... help. Bring a truck or a car with some clearance.
FWIW, due to insurance concerns diving is only open when an UWW instructor or divemaster is onsite, so that tends to limit access to weekends with the OW students doing their skills.
Have fun!

When he turned his head too far his neck seal leaked. I just figure that a drysuit is just a "dryer" suit.

Hey Steve -
Where/what is Tobermorey?
And does this mean you are elevated from a lowly "quarrior"? Glad to hear you're feeling better!!!
I'm probably dry this weekend unless I opt for another exciting murk-filled dive in the lovely Pearl Lake.
But, next weekend back on the Enterprise for my (hopefully) last TDI course dive -
Then up to dive the Straits on the 20th & 21st - REALLY looking foward to that!
I think there's still a couple spots open on the boat that weekend... :)

Connie and StSomewhere,
Would like to dive Quail Run, but unable to make it this weekend (Vegas here I come! then down to Dallas/Austin area for a week). I might be able to make it August 27 - 28 weekend, however. Night dive/BBQ sounds good to me! Haven't dove the site yet, but have gone in the shop (bought a new light - anyone else have a total inability to go into a dive shop without buying something???) and have some friends that dove there last weekend. It will be nice to have some diving a little closer to home (Lincoln).
StSomewhere, I will let you know if I will be making the trek to Malvern the last weekend of August. Always looking for more dive buddies.

Scubagal and anyone else local to Omaha, failing a better plan (better plan defined as deeper/clearer water) I'm doing the night dive and cookout at UWW's Quail Run quarry (the other Quail Run in Malvern, IA) on Aug. 27th. Come out and join me.
Or feel free to try and talk me into a road trip to Beaver Lake, Table Rock, Oronogo, etc. though. :) Or maybe the weekend of Sept 10th would work better? That's probably the best bet with my schedule...
DeepDiverBob, how was CCV? I found out today that Don from UWW in Omaha was there that same week. Small world... :)

We're tentatively planning on diving at Quail Run on Sunday, August 21st. According to their calendar, they should be there that weekend with 3 OW divers. We had planned to go to Oronogo the first weekend in August, however a last minute business trip interfered with those plans. :(
Can't make it the weekend of September 10th, unfortunately. We'll have just returned from Tortola! :D Heartland Scuba's Treasure Dive is September 10-11 if you're interested, here's some info from last year's event: Treasure Dive (http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=71123)

Actually, we haven't left yet! The trip is over Labor Day weekend. I did the trip planning myself. If we get some decent UW pics I'll post a trip report when we get back. Last January we went on a trip with our LDS to Cozumel, first time we'd done that. The timing usually doesn't work out, so we normally end up planning trips on our own.

Mermet is always the safest bet as far as the wind and weather is concerned. I bet it's a hot one there today, though.

I'm thinking more of a general rule. If you're going to become a backup for Capn' Mike, IMHO it would be in your best interest to get your posterior covered. If this was a one time thing, I wouldn't worry.
James
P.S. Sorry you were blown out, that's a drag. Would have liked to have heard what the conditions were like.

It was a one-time thing (I think). Conditions that morning were 3-foot seas and a steady drizzle, both predicted to get worse throughout the day. Poor Mike was crying in his diet Pepsi.
