Rule, shmule. We're just getting to the point on this board where we have enough local members to get out and dive togeather more . Diving, friendship, having a good time: that's what's important to me.
I'm involved here for a few reasons:
My LDS is great at putting togeather trips to exotic locales, but chokes on doing the local stuff beyond the well-known quarries and Bull Sholes.
I'm not the type who enjoys "escorted" trips anyway.
I have more fun with, and learn more from, the people I've met here and on (gasp!) SB than with the types who fly south once or twice a year to look at the pretty fishies and sip drinks with little umbrellas. Don't get me wrong, I like that too, but putting on my drysuit and checking out a wreck in murky 42-degree water really does it for me. It's so non Disney-fied.
I pursue becoming a better diver the same way that I've pursued becoming a better musician: get the proper training, and try to associate with those who are better at it than you are. And do it, do it, do it, than do it some more. Both diving and music are called skills for a reason.
OK, I'm through venting. The heat has me edgy, my sax isn't working right, and the events of the past week have me totally depressed and confused. I'm going to Mermet next weekend before I go off my rocker.
Dive safe.

Nah, it should be a prerequsite to open water. If you can't master that, nothing else is going to do you any good.

Since I see no other women have been willing to dive into this conversation, I'd like to stick up with for the 'fairer' sex. You could just try to get your significant other to join you, then she gets to share the toys...after all....

Don't give up hope, a year ago I would have said you were crazy if you said I'd be diving in the cold waters of WI--and where was I in May of this year...finishing my OW Cert in the cold waters of WI.
Sorry guys, didn't mean to mess up your fun....Carry on...;)

I found no reason to meddle in the conversation. When my husband wants something he has to ask me. When I want something I just go buy it!
Fortunately, we both dive, so he ends up getting pretty much everything.
Swimming Horse has a point. If your spouse is interested in diving, she/he will be more understanding of your purchases. Of course having them as divers, all those purchases will be double.

Whats your thinking/rationale...?
Your just starting out right? Since you mentioned OMS/Diverite and a wing - I'm going to make an assumption that your not looking at traditional recreational BC's. The difference between any of the brands is in a few particular design features. (Inflator Hose, Dump Valve, Wing Shape, Resingtricting Bands)
Figure out what kinda of diver you want to eventually become, and buy the right gear for that. No one likes to go buy their OW gear, and turn around when they get into wreck/tech and have to ebay it all at a loss.... Oh the $$$$ I could have saved...
I've gone through a SP ClassicPlus, Knighthawk, and DR Transplate, before settleing on a plain BP/W w/ single piece harness. Its simple, fits right, is adjustable, and lets me reach my valves. Something none of the others did...

Loose the shoulder pads & right d-ring and I'll be happy... :)
(I don't get it - do the shoulder pads go above or below the d-rings? Or do you have to remove the d-rings - cuz they sure as well won't fit over the pad...?)
How much lift is in that wing?
Is that a single/doubles wing?
What kind of tanks are you diving?
Are you diving wet/dry?
How much lead do you carry - and where is it stowed? (belt? harness? p/v weight?)

Yea, what he said... LOL... I'm a backplate reject too.... For a single. That wing you're showing is way big. Need something with 27 to 40lbs lift. I dive with 27lb lift on a single. It's real small. The wing you're showing is a good wing for duals. I have one. But for single tanks. It isn't very good. It's also not a lot of lift. Just enough.
I have an extra 27lb wing and backplate. If I ever dive with ya. You can try it out.. Before you buy.
Have a transpac 2 also you could try.
There are a lot of way's to go with gear. But, buy right the first time and you'll save a LOT of money. LOL. I have a transpack 2 also. Haven't used it in 1 or 2 years now... Got the trek wing with it. Use that still... LOL With dual AL80's..
If you're going to Mermet on laborday weekend. I might be there.. Still unsure... You could try em then..
But, try different ones before you buy..

im going to get the oms, i want to go pure tech. and i want to joint eh will county s/rescue team. im buying the gear that can get me there. the wing im getting is a 45lb lift or maybe a 36 not sure yet i have to try both of them out. its a single wing for now but lator im going to get the double blader for when i do doubles. i want to get he gear that i can just add more on lator instead of buying difrent gear.
im getting a good price so thats why im going oms.
the lds gave me a $ for diverite alu bp, rec wing,s/s cams, weight bag for 500 im like hell no. to much and she wont go down.
ps thats me drivign but my wife do do all the obsticals with me spotting.
take a look at me site theres a lot more.
Mverick
July 29th, 2005, 04:35 PM
No double bladder needed....
I dive on a rescue squad already. But I don't usually use a bc unless I'm a support diver. And your gonna tear up that bc. Fish hooks and all...
Most rescue/recovery work is very shallow... Most, not all... Your best friend is your EMT shears and a 2 good knives... For all the mono fishing line... I've gotten tangled up a lot underwater... And it's Blackwater. Zero Visibility....
Just make sure you get a Single tank wing. For singles diving. For duals you'll buy a dual tank wing. Having one that does both. Isn't optimal. 45lbs is Huge for a single. I wouldn't go over 40lbs. Oxycheq probably makes the nicest wing now. Expensive though. But really tough.
But, You can just get by other way's. Many Many Many people dive differently. But, that is the PURE TECH way.
And diving Rescue/Recovery and Tech diving is totaly different too....
Have fun and be safe...
