I signed up for this class the other night. This might be the most difficult specialty class I have taken yet. I know nothing about cameras or taking pictures. This should be very interesting. The only thing I have going for me is I know I can hover to take the picture.

Well one thing I learned on my last trip is you have to make sure you get there before the DM :)

This one is almost as good for developing your skill as Cavern. Not only do you have to hover, you have to do it while holding the camera very still and also time your breathing so you don't snap the picture on the exhale and get "nothin but bubbles" in your shot.

Funny you should mention that. To this day I still think that the most difficult thing I've ever done underwater was going from 90' to 30' with my eyes closed, simulating a silt out. It's amazing how much you rely on visuals when it comes to keeiping your bouyancy in check.

This is why the age of cheap digital cameras has caused animosity, in some circles, towards photographers.

Digital makes it all better. I paid to develop a roll of film, double prints naturally, that contained nothing but bubbles. It was a deep dive, and since I was a little narced I thought that the bubbles wouldn't matter since I knew I had the camera pointed in the right direction. LOL!!

. . . and then there was my very first photo experience, with an MX-10, which you have to adjust.

I carefully adjusted the camera before each photo--to set it for the number of feet DEEP I was, instead of the number of feet AWAY from the subject. Another wasted roll of film!

Digital makes it all better.

The theory is that the advance of digital camaras has led to a barage of divers who are neither skilled divers, not photographers taking a large number of photos during a dive and just deleting the ones that don't count.

I want to make it clear, that I do not subscribe to this theory, though I have heard it multiple times.

The theory goes on to say that "real" photographers have developed both diving and photgraphy skills so as not to disturb things while they wait long periods for the right shot.

Personally, as one of those "digitial" users. I maybe take 20 shots on a good dive, and while I do assume I can delete the bad ones, being a responsible diver is first for me and getting a shot is secondary. Which is why I do not subscribe to the theory.

It's the same old addage, though. People complain that since there are more divers, there are more bad divers. Duh. They also complain that since there are more photographers, there are more bad photographers. Go figure :)
