Hello every one. Hi have an itch that needs a good scratch. I need to get in the water. I received my open water cert. last summer at Quail Run Quarry at Rolla MO. I havent made to many dives, mainly the lack of equipment. Now i am getting all my equipment. Once i get my equipment i will only need one more thing, some one to dive with. I have searched the net and the forums high and low and have found nothing. Any one interested? One more thing i have 2 kids that are age 10 and 12. Any ideas on how to get them interested, i am kind of thinking about giving the Padi sassy program a run to start things out. Well its late and i need to hit the bed, i look foward to any replys.

Welcome to the board, Dan. I think you'll have some luck at finding a buddy here; there are several from your area that hang out on this board. Myself, I'll be glad to dive with you. However, I'm in W KY and do most my local diving at Mermet Springs. MS is a pretty good drive for you but not out of the question.

My kids were 12 and 14 when they were certified. Really, absolutely, no problem getting them interested, but now (four years later) they've both about quit.

Check back later and also in a few days. This board has been slow; I imagine several regular posters have gone diving.

You're right, it's late 3:30am where I'm sitting. I gotta go to Memphis. see ya. Welcome. steve

Dan - Check out either the SSI Scuba Ranger's program or the PADI SEAL's program (I'm sorry I don't know anything about the PADI program) but I am a Ranger Instr. It is geared for kids 8 to 12. There are 5 levels snorkleing to Demo Ranger. Usually done in 2 to 5 classes. They dive with the gear and all. I emphasize gear hows and whys, putting the gear together/breaking it down and of course the ascents and descents and all of the safety reasons we do what we do. No test or OW is required. It basically is an intro to diving. We then have a Ranger activity each month, such as: Night, Gear, Signing, Buddy Ranger (where they bring a friend), Parent (where the parent dives or does a Discover Scuba) etc. If you have any questions let me know.

Welcome to the Board too!! :)

Children 10 years old can obtain a Junior Diver certification from PADI and anyone 12 years or older can certify through YMCA. Therefore, it would appear that you need to go the PADI route if you want to get both of them certified at this time. I don't know of shops in Salem, MO (I live in St. Louis) but there are a number of shops here that could accommodate. Some even do their certifications in Rolla which would be convenient to you.

Welcome to the board. I don't think I would bother with the childrens programs for your 12 year old, just look into a junior open water. The 10 year old would be a good age for seal team or a similar program.

Hey Dan, Welcome to the board. We just finished up getting our 12-yr old daughter OW certified last weekend. She struggled with the book stuff, but not the water skills...she needed to spend a little more time in the book BEFORE the class. Our 10 and 8 year old are chomping at the bit, but since we are not around where they have the classes for the younger kids, they have to wait. In the mean time, they are building some awesome swimming and snorkeling skills. Just being around us and reading the dive magazines that seem to be laying around the house:) seems to keep them very interested. They're even considering doing school projects about diving.

Best of luck

Denise

I want to start them out with some thing real simple. They really havent had any experience with any of it. Plus also i would hate to start a junior certification and find out they have no intrest. Right now they say they want to do it, As with many things i have done with them they just dont get in to it. There attention span can be real short at times. Start simple and see how they like it first.

Thanks for the great welcome. I will have the rest of my equipment later this week, get my tank checked out and diving i will go. Im going to go to the city pool to get my equipments bouyance dialed in and then a few dives at the quail run quarry to get every thing figured out.

Later for now.
