View Full Version : Marketplace vs. Get Togethers...

I think I posted this in the wrong forum. I guess it should be in "Get Togeathers".

I've split this off to avoid disrupting the original thread.

The question is about when a post should be in Marketplace->Trips vs. the Get Together thread.

MgicTwnger,

In this case you posted correctly as I see it. You were posting about a charter you were putting together that required an outlay of cash. I don't see the Marketplace as beeing strictly commercial. We have a classifieds section there that is not commercial at all. Commercial or not, you are "selling" somthing, i.e. space on a boat, and it belongs the the marketplace where you put it.

The Get Togethers, forum is more about "free" dives where people want to meet others. These dives, may have a cost, i.e. travel to the site and small site fees. I.E. a $10 entry fee to x-quarry.

A different example is things like the "Explore Midwest Diving" program and similar programs (sorry OJ and TS, I don't recall the names of your programs) that are run by shops/clubs, but don't carry any cost other than entrance fees. These are technically commercial but should be in "Get Togethers"

This is the way I see things, but this is not my board, it is our board. If you disagree with this assessment, let me know. I don't want to run things with an iron fist but rather, adapt to the feelings of the user base. If you have an alternate opinion on how these things should shake out post here please!

Not being a big poster, I only feel as though I should comment because you mentioned the Explore Midwest Diving program...

That being said, I think the seperation you identified is more than appropriate and I believe it should work well for the board except for one scenario.

What is a person is putting together a charter, not for commerce, but just to go. For instance, an instructor or shop that is organizing a Blackbeards trip could - and should - be presumed to be making a profit on it. On the other hand, I have a friend who did this sort of thing more for fun than anything else. Money is all payable to the cruise line and the intention was to get a group of divers - most of whom knew each other - on their own boat but they needed a few extra people to fill the entire charter. Just my $.02.

All-in-all, James, I think I speak for most of us when I say we trust your judgement. Until you do something to the contrary, you have been fair to all and reasonable and most of your decisions will be viewed that way. But again, that's just my $.02

I agree - without you we wouldn't have our Board.

Nothing but agreement from me. And you may quote me on that rare phrase.

And, BTW, our group is simply called the "Fun-Dive Club". I tried giving it a cool name once, but noone cared about what it was called as long as we went out and did a bunch of dives for fun! We are sponsored and funded by The Dive Shop of St. Louis, but our dive plans are often to different sites than where The Dive Shop classes and trips are planned. Most of the plans are local and most have no cost beyond entry fees and hotels when appropriate.

And I repeat, "Excellent job, Atlaua!" as has already been stated by others.

While I really appreciate all the votes of confidence, I am serious. Please feel free to let me and the other mods know about the way you think things should be handled, either via the suggestions/support forums or PM.
