While driving to Monterey, CA I stopped at the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM. It is a great place to dive. You have to get a permit from city hall for $8.00. The hole is 60' in diameter, and 81' deep. It flows at 3000 gallons per minute and is 60 degrees F.
Entry and exit are very easy. The visibility is 81'+. One can see a diver on the bottom from just looking into the water from the surface.
There are 2 training squares suspended at about 20 and 25' depths. There are anchor lines from them down to the bottom.
Also, there are small statues placed around the walls by other divers.
Monterey Bay.
Diving aboard the Beach Hopper II. Dive site--The Pinnacles. Depth 85'. Visibility--40'; Water temp--52. This was a lousy dive, A long boat ride from the marina, rough water. Once in the water and on the bottom the surge was 15 to 20' slamming me into the rocks. The kelp was small, hardly any fish and the ones that were there were wedged into cracks in the rocks in order to protect themselves from the surge. I estimate the surge at 2+ knots because there was no swimming against it. You could only maneuver during the lulls, which were very short. Descending and ascending the anchor line was brutal; the jon line was a blessing. Most all of the marine growth on the rocks was small, like moss growing on the rocks around here; colorful, but its not the south Pacific. Surely there are better days to dive Monterey Bay than the one I picked.
I was thinking of going to Point Lobos, but they have an entry fee and only allow 15 dive teams per day. You have to make reservations ahead of time. Can you believe it? reservations for a shore dive?
The even charge an admission fee for 3 year olds at the Aquarium!
California is a beautiful place, but the liberals have ruined it.
