Well, I had meant to head out to Mermet this morning, but I slept in and decided to head over to the Dive Stop instead. This was my 13th trip of the year, most of them on Friday afternoon after work. Most of them solo. I talked to Dave over email on Wednesday to ask him if anyone was going to be around on Friday since I was thinking about heading over after work, and he said no, but they would be open over the weekend.

So I got there right at 9am before the staff was even there. When they got there, I was pretty surprised when they told me I couldn't dive. WTF!? Apparently they have a no solo diving rule. That just surprised the heck outta me since most of my dives there this year have been by myself, and I've never tried to hide that fact. I've never seen or heard about this rule, and their website has no mention of it either.

I talked to Dave over the phone, and he said no dice, although he did mention that he solo dives in the quarry, and he lets select other folks solo dive there too. That little tidbit just pissed me off.

I'm just really irked that I wasted three hours of my weekend and didn't even get to dive (plus another hour or two packing last night). Even more so because I talked to the owner about it beforehand, and he's seen me jumping in by myself in the past. I was probably the biggest supporter of the Dive Stop on this board, and now I don't even think I want to dive there anymore.

You're not select enough, huh?

I've been refused solo dive priveleges at Mermet before, but they immediately set me up with a buddy, so no problem.

Glen has even set me up with a staff member if no one else is around.

A couple of years ago in Florida I stopped at one of the fresh water dives sites. It was a Monday and I was on my way back north and wanted to wash the salt off my gear.
I walk into the office/shop to pay. I was along and being Monday was the only dive there. They informed me they do not allow solo diving. Then said I could wait around it see if any others showed up. After mentioning this they asked my cert. level. I told them Instructor. There response was "Oh hell go ahead, we don't care if instructors kill themselves"
Got the diving in and salt off.

I've never really had an issue with Glen's rules. [Except the "No SMB" rule that Bill and I found out about ;) ] They've also always been pretty accomodating about single divers and never turning people away who want to dive. If I'd have gotten up when I'd meant to, I would have had a couple decent dives today.

On the other hand, I forced myself to get out and put in a 5 mile run with the dog, so that's probably better for me than diving anyway. I am bummed that my 36-month diving streak is in jeopardy

Dont feel to bad yet. Just for you, I might be able to make a dive at RBD on the 31st, this way you can say you got a dive in, LOL

Inconsistencies will anger most, if Cruz knew this ahead of time and witnessed this over the summer. I might have been surprised as well. If he was not going to allow you to dive, he should've kept the tibit of information to himself. You're right he might have just lost one heck of patron.....which Dive Stop is much in need of. You're the only diver I've met that has dove there that many times...especially in one year...that I am aware of. I support the quarry, but not that much!

Any idea if RBD is divable? I've got two weeks free and would like to get in the water.

That is a bit ridiculous. I can understand letting some people dive solo and others not, but obviously you have dove solo there before so it should have been a non issue.
