A handful of us plan to dive Mermet Saturday to do some reel handling practice. Running guide lines and jump lines.

See ya there.

And maybe even shooting lift bags.

Oh yeah, I love shooting lift bags. Much easier than running lines.

Just secured a carpool buddy and a room, so I'll be there Saturday AND Sunday. :)

Dont forget to change those clocks...would hate to see people an hour late for diving...

There is a good chance I will not be there now. My buddy just notified me he has what ever it is that is going around, just short of swine flu. He was suppose to be my driver, my truck has been acting up, so I dont trust it on that drive yet, until I get it checked out.

Yeah, I just broke my fever Wednesday night. My overall bout wasn't too bad, the worse only lasted 18 hrs and most was overnight, but I have enough residual nasal congestion that I wouldn't try to dive right now.

I don't think mine was close to swine. I had a regular flu vacine on the 15th. So, I either didn't have the flu (but something else) or the vacine helped minimize the effects (sure I don't understand that relationship, but it's likely the researchers dont' either.)

. . . or the vaccine precipitated the illness? I know too many folks who coincidentally get the flu shortly after getting the vaccination. Of course it could be a different strain than what the vaccine was for, or the vaccine may have lessened the suffering of an illness you were going to get anyway.

I'll be diving Mermet this weekend, unvaccinated.

if my truck checks out okay, I might make a solo run down there for the day. We will see.

Hope you make it. We'd hate to have the quarry to ourselves.

Yeah, but this one wasn't a live virus vaccine. They use to be regularly that way, but the flu type is rarely now. (H1N1 cvacine may be different) The other diff is that single dose units don't have perservative (thermisol or something mecury based) and multi dose units have a perservative.

I did react to a live virus vacine back about 25 years ago. (Reaction was days, not weeks IIRC.) Decided not to get one again. Then I got the flu and it was so bad I either thought I was going to die or wished I would. It was four days of hell. Since then I have been getting a vaccine and have been flu free. Given that I am on a lot of planes and they are a great place to "share" I rationalize it is good for me.

Problem is...most folks don't differentiate influenza from the pukin, poopen thing and blame it on the flu shot. I'll take the shot every time it's offered. A local guy just lost his healthy 7 year old son a couple days ago to flu like symptoms...get vaccinated if you can.

So, to return to the issue at hand . . .

I just packed the car with 3 different lift bags, 6 reels, 2 spools, and a handful of line arrows. Felt like getting ready for a multi-jump cave dive at Peacock, well, except for the lift bags. But lift bags are fun, too!

I just helped to video a fundamentals class at Haigh last weekend. I video'd the SMB shoot. The instructor shoots his SMB, then all three students. When we are done, there is the one student with his SMB he just shot and the instructor holding two other ones. I still don't know where the fourth one went. Magic Disappearing SMB!

Sounds like a fun weekend - my dive buddy is under the weather right now. Actually a little self-induced flu. :)

It was indeed a fun weekend, with excellent weather and great water conditions. Vis was 15 ft. at the worst, and at least 25 ft. in most places. 62 F from surface to 15 ft., 52 F from 15 ft. to 45 ft., and 43 F the rest of the way down.

Today we did practice running penetration reels in the 727 as well as launching lift bags from the 15 ft. safety stop. Very well executed by the rookies, too!

Well, rookies at using a reel anyway. And yes, Dave (bludiver) showed up today.

Yes, it was quite a unique experience. We were over at the 727 and we were slowly making our way past the rail car. When we spotted the Sturgeon just off the rail car near the wall. It would slowly swim, then rest on the bottom, making it's way along the crest of the wall. The Sturgeon appeared to be white and gray in color and some where between 1.5 - 2 feet long. It really wasn't too bashful. This is a first for me at Mermet, and added to great day of diving!

Like B1gcountry, I didn't know there were any Sturgeon in Mermet. It was nice to see.

Thanks for the complement.

I had a blast!

The diving was easy and relaxing. Getting away and going diving can be an escape from everything else in the world, a very therapeutic recreation. Whether it's the economy, the daily grind or whatever it may be, you can leave all of these problems and issues topside on the surface. Immerse yourself and cleanse the soul. There are times when I just can't seem to do that. However, this weekend was just what I needed and everything seemed to fall right into place. When that happens it's a fabulous feeling!

You're right I didn't want to come off the bottom. Maybe next time I'll shoot an air bag with a post card attached to it "Wish you were here! P.S. Please send air." :)

As the Skull and I found out, shooting a bag at Mermet does not always prompt a rational response.
