I just received an email from my sister, and she now wants to get certified. My brother is already certified. Looks like we might be doing some fun family diving vacations.

That is great!
I kind of envision having dive trips with my kids as they get older and leave the nest. Everyone getting together at warm, Caribbean locations for Christmas. Kind of like that.

The kids programs are starting to grow and I am looking forward to trying one of them out....not this year, but the next. By then my wife and oldest daugher will be certified and my two boys will be 10 and 11 so they can enroll in a junior diving program. My yougest will be 7 then and there are supposed to be great programs for her age also. I think it would be a whole lot more memorable to have my kids play with sea otters, manta rays and dolphins than Mickey Mouse. There was a pretty good article in one of the dive magazines this month, I think they said there are programs in Bonaire, Grand Caymen, Costa Rica and Cozumel.

I'm not sure which agency you are certified with but SSI offers Scuba Rangers for 8 to 12 yr olds. I think PADI has the SEALS program. I have had 2 Rangers classes and I don't know who enjoyed them more the kids or I.

Padi offers a Junior Open water for 10 year olds, I wasn't aware of any programs for kids younger than that. Young children aren't my instructors forte either, he won't take them under 12. I don't have a problem with that...it give me time to collect the funds!

Yes, PADI has Seal Team, minimum age 8 years old. It is totally conducted in a pool. The introductory program is in a pool, max depth 6 feet. This is 5 classes if I remember correctly. The next level, Master Seal Team, they may go to 12 feet. I have not taught this course yet, but have observed, and it looks great. The kids have a fantastic time. They have their own book. They do "missions" in the pool then log them.
Actually, my get together for the holidays thing may be happening soon. My son graduates H.S. in May then leaves in July for the Navy.

I am only familiar with SSI and they offer the sasy program starting at 5 also. SSI's Scuba Ranger program like the SEAL program in that the water portion is totally pool confined. There are 5 levels Red, White, Blue, Sliver and Demo. I usually teach the course over 2 weekends. After that we have local club meetings - we meet once a month and teach a speciality course, Night Ranger, Gear Ranger, Fish ID Ranger etc. The kids dive every meeting so the get a chance to work with their gear and practice their skills. A great program for little ones to learn about diving.
I am sorry I hi-jacked your thread Bob - that is way cool that your sister is now interested!!!

Just goes to show how excited we get when our families and friends want to get involved with our passion! And how excited we get to be able to help them.
