I have a quick question about Insurance for DM/DC. My current insurance for Scuba Ranger Instr is a group insurance for shop related activities. When I get my DC completed I will just upgrade my current policy with my LDS. My question is: am I covered as a DC if I am just diving with hubby on a weekend for fun and not on a Shop related trip? If not what do some of our other DM do? Any thoughts James? :)
Thanks,
Becky

I am A PADI Divemaster. I also have coverage thru my shop. This is for liability while I am working as a DM for the shop. On my own, I am not covered. If I want to work as a DM independently, not thru my shop, I would need to pay the extra and get my own policy.
As a side, I also carry DAN insurance for myself and family for diving emergencies, not professional liabilty. I think your post was referring to the liability insurance though.

Becky,
If you're fun diving with your husband you would not need the liability ins. It only covers instructing/guiding/working with other divers. If you are setting something up for a shop related dive you would need it. If I understand correctly SSI does not allow you to work independent of a store so I would think you would always be covered while working for them. As an independent PADI DM I carry my own policy but on any fun dive where I have to show a c-card, say Coz or the Keys, all they will ever see is my AOW card. There is no need to be named in a lawsuit only because you happened to be on the same boat. Also, as Julie said, DAN insurance (or one of their competitors) for personal coverage is pretty cheap.

You are right a Dive Con can only work with an SSI shop - no independent work.
I carry the DAN prefered policy.
I was just curious if the "same day same ocean" logic carried over to the need for more than a group/shop coverage once a person becomes a DC/DM.
Thanks for the input everyone,
Becky

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Dive Con?

I believe it's "Dive Control Specialist" the SSI version of Dive Master.
