Conditions at Mine La Motte were fabulous. Visibility was 20-25 feet throughout, a balmy 46 degrees at a max depth of 34 feet. I’ve only seen one other time when conditions were better in this quarry. So if you want to see 100000 empty beer cans on the bottom of a quarry now is your chance. This is a completely unimproved dive site with no ladders, docks or platforms. If you are diving on the weekend please be aware that you will be sharing the water with several hundred swimmers and rafters. The gate fee is still twenty.

Did they pull out the dock that was down in front of the shack? Fun place to go and dive when there are not a million drunk kids around...

If I wanted to over pay and not see anything, I would go to New Melle.

I did the "caves" at Mine Lamotte once, and that is one cave I will not go back to. I dont trust that place at all. Especially when you can look to the left of the entrance and see a very recent collapse.

It's interesting how different people can see things so differently. I think Mine LaMotte is the best "cave" dive we have in the midwest. With miles of tunnels and line, you'll never see it all (one tunnel goes more than a mile). I've made about 50 dives in there, and I'm always curious to see what's around the next turn. Although the vis is variable, it can be better than I've ever seen in a real midwest caves. Plus, it's always divable compared to the real caves which are only divable a few months/year. Of course, it's known for being a little "cold".

With three entrances/exits fairly close to each other, I've never really worried about a collapse.

The little dock is still there as well as the cuddy cabin. Not much else though. No treasures either. The water was so clear though there was algea growing on the bottom that normally sees little light.

Just keep telling yourself that was algae growing on the bottom. It'll keep you from wondering why the hats and sunglasses on the bottom all disintegrate.
