I'm working an OW class this weekend, and vis is terrible, even before anyone got in. Calling it 5 foot is generous. All this rain has really taken its toll, thats for sure. I did have to make 3 separate gear recoveries, and vis did seem to open up down around 35 foot or so, but unfortnetly, I didnt get to spend much time down there.
Surface temp is around 70, 15 foot platform was 62.

I figured things would be pretty murky with the rain that rolled through last night. Hopefully it will clear up for you guys tomorrow. Don't forget to poop on someones fun this weekend :)

Vis really did suck shallow. I almost ran into the orange platform. Couldn't see the school bus from the motorcycle. Vis got a lot better down deeper. Probably 15-20'. Isn't that much, but it was welcome after the crap in the shallows.

Hope it's better next week for us. The rain is supposed to be done for that area!

It it just me or is the vis at Mermet not as good as it used to be. When I first started going there, it seemed like 100' easy. OK, not that great, but pretty darn good. I used to go in the fall, so maybe it's a seasonal thing with the rain?
I think it's usually clear below the thermocline, but it's just dark.

It is a seasonal thing, and the past couple years the rainy season has been very very rainy in southern IL.
It is nearly always good below the thermocline, but when you're working with OW classes you don't get to go down there very often. :(

Last year during the summer was probably the best vis I have ever seen at Mermet. I think once this rain settles down, the vis will get better again.

I stopped by the Ykiki pavilion, and met Mick, but he didn't mention you were there. Kathy would have liked to meet you, she came along and tried getting back in the water.
