Just a notice for all you cool divers who want to hang out with the rest of us cool divers -- especially if you are in the market for a dry suit, or just want to try one for the first time, or want to try a DUI suit or 2 or 3.

DOG Days will be at the Dewey Short Dam April 25-26, and Scuba Sally and I will be there assisting with the event and of course diving!

For those unfamiliar with the event, read this: http://www.dui-online.com/dog_main.aspx

Hey SLIM, how about a TBL conditions report? And an update the week of the event? Thanks.

Hope to see some of y'all there!

I am thinking I will make it down for the weekend. Anybody interested in trying the Kimberling bridge that weekend? (Conditions allowing.)

I was asked to help out with an OW class that weekend, other wise I would have been there for sure.

It is a helpful way to figure out how things fit as a poorly fitting dry suit or a leaky one really detracts from the dive experience. I found having a thin neck and wrists it took me awhile to figure out how to prevent leakage, even if the seal is cut correctly. My tall height was also a challenge. So going to this event offers people the opportunity to try on different sizes and trouble shoot what their individual requirements are in a dry suit.
Have fun everyone! Again, most of the diving I am doing right now is in my mind.

"it took me awhile to figure out how to prevent leakage"

---I am using all of my limited self restraint to not insert the pic of ur husband pulling your hair out of your neck seal. I overcame this particular hurdle by going bald and getting fat, although I don't suggest you go that route. What do you think Tom?

I thought this was going to be a pee valve joke...

I'd prefer not to think of that, actually.

I'm planning on being there as well. And, I would be interested in diving the bridge too.

Since I'll be spending a significant portion of my time helping run the event I'm sure I won't have time for a boat trip over to the bridge. I'd love to join y'all on a bridge dive next time I'm at the lake, though.

Yes, the challenge of being a woman diver who doesn't want to shave her head! I would not be offended by that picture. Perhaps someone would have suggestions for me as those bioseals are very sticky!

I still have yet made it to the bridge...one of these days...

No problem, it's just to the north of the submerged town of Oasis. After you swim through the old church, you turn left and go about 10 kick cycles. LOL!

I am definitely on for the weekend event. I am going to head down on Friday.

If anyone wants to dive early, I can head down early on Friday.

Otherwise I'll come down a bit later. Anyone planning on Friday night dive at the dam?

I won't be able to get out of town 'til Friday early eve, and will arrive in Branson very late. See ya at the tent Saturday morning.

Does anyone have a dive report for TBL after all the rain we got last weekend?

SLIM
April 22nd, 2009, 07:40 AM
Yup I had put it under TBL for when I was in last week. Yesterday I had 10-15 foot of vis. The water was clear no particulate but I was around the marina. Temps are 53* at 15 foot. Sory that is the deepest I got. We are to have some great days with lenty of sun and warmth. Thursday is to gt up to the low 80's and stay that way for the weekend (belive that when I see it). Only thing is where it wil be held at is in perfect alinment for the direction the wind has been comming from. Wind is to die down bye the weekend. If I get time, I am going to try to jump in tomorow over at the dam and see what it looks like there.

Thanks for the update on conditions, SLIM. See all you cool divers there in the morning. I'll be the one wearing the DUI Crew T-shirt. LOL!

But the question is, did you break out the real DUI Rock Boots for the occasion?

Yes I did. I need the extra width when I wear my Thinsulate booties--and if I end up as an in-water guide I figured I might like the extra warmth for extended dive times.

So, DUI shirt, DUI hat, traditional rock boots--and when I had hair it was red(ish). I will put theskull on my name tag to help y'all out, though.

Name tag worked--I got to meet Gillty from the board. (Hey lurker, join the conversations--give us your impressions of the weekend and tell us where you're diving next).

We had ideal weather, 75+ drysuit test divers, and a high enough ratio of staff and volunteers that it never seemed crowded or rushed (to me).

SLIM's conditions report of 10-15 ft. vis and 53 F down to 15 ft. depth was right on--at least until the first couple dozen test divers swam back and forth across the same path at that depth along the ledge.

Below the thermocline (app. 50 ft.) the vis improved to 15-20 ft. and the temp only dropped to 49 F. And the temp still only dropped to 47 F at 100 ft. depth. Water was dark but gauges were readable with ambient light at 50 ft. deep and it kept getting darker until about 80 ft. deep where it was like a night dive (love that!).

Got to hang with scububa a bit on Saturday-always a pleasure-though I didn't manage to get a dive in with him as I had promised dives to a couple of our shop customers and staff members, and small buddy teams were most advised in the low vis we had.

Yeah, always fun to hang with the cool divers. Spot on report for the weather. Just right for dry suiting.

I got three nice dives in. I meet up with Dustin Carey from OK. He was dry suit cert'd, intro cave. I think SLIM knows him a bit. He was testing out the suits, I stuck with my own. I recently bought new thermals so I didn't even try them out so I wouldn't run the risk of deveolping any buyer remorse.

First dive Dustin wanted to keep to 60' as he "learned" the suit. The DUI CF is a nice looking suit. The first one was a bit long on him, so he exchanged it down a size. With 300 g insulation it looked like a cave cut and with the material, he moved thru the water like he was in a wet suit.

The second dive we did to about 110' and diid a run to the dam wall and then worked back up the rock face to the entry. Everything said about vis is what we ran into.

The third dive was 80ish' and it was funny how many "dust trails" we ran across. The third dive we negotiated the hill of the lost stairs. (I assume the stairs now lead to the church in Oasis!) The water level made the trees excellent 'buddies' for donning/doffing fins.

I too was surprised by the quantity of larger bass at the safety stop level. My borther told me he recently saw a fishing show about TRL and last years condition. Evidently the fish harvest was much lower last year and so there is a larger crop of fish this year in the 4-5 lb zone.

We had ideal weather...

Way too hot for dry suit, in my opinion. Needed to drop about 40 degrees for my ideal weather.

Hi guys,

It was a nice to meet all the great folks up at Table Rock. I have attended several DOG days events and this one felt less rushed than any of the others I have been to, I definitely enjoyed doing things at a more relaxed pace. I counted approximately 50 DUI crew shirts on Saturday morning. I pretty much guided divers both days, but I did get to sneak off and do a fun dive Sat evening. The improved vis deep was very nice.

I wish we had a larger dive area so you could get away from the stirred up visibility. We have to get the word out that doing "silt angels" after your decent is not recommended :) .

The worst part of the whole weekend was the BRUTAL drive back to DFW!!

Regards,

Gillty

"Silt angels"
I like that. I'll use it often, and give you credit for the quote.
Hope you can get up and do some fun diving with us on TBL some time this summer.

Let us know what's going on down in Texas once in a while if'n ya don't mind.
