Ok, who here has done a PADI AI?
I've been having some trouble tracking down exactly what is involved with this course? Seems to be less work than DM? Is it just knowledge and another skill circuit or is there more to it than that?

My husband and I are going through AI now. Yes, there is a little more to it. At this point, they teach you to teach the PADI way. Your instructor will give you a demonstration of a teach back, they take a micro-section of some like, the RDP, then teach it, emphasizing the things they want you to pick up on. You will then be required to do this. I was given Streamlining and something else (notes are at home).
I'm at work and short of time, but can post more about it later.

I plan on doing AI in the fall. I want to work the whole summer as DM before embarking on another major course like that. But I also heard it can be completed in about 5 weeks. I dont know if that is true or not.

Actually, according to the CD it can be done in 3 days...

Yes, it could be done in 3 days, but I think that means you have prepared ahead of time by reading and completing a series of knowledge reviews and are prepared to do tests (from DM) on - 1)Physics 2)Physiology 3)RDP 4)Skills & Environment 5)Equipment. Also, I think the 3 days would be FULL DAYS. It would be very intense.
When you start AI, you need to get the Instuctor Candidate Workbook. This is for AI & Instructor. There is a section called IDC Part 1 (AI Course) and another section IDC Part 2 (OWSI Program). This workbook includes Knowledge reviews or Independent Learning over 16 different sections. Things like The PADI System - History & Use, General Standards & Procedures, Business Principles, etc. You use The Instructor Manual, Best of the Undersea Journal, The Law & Professional Diving, the Business of Diving, and a couple of others and read and answer questions.
In the IDC Part 1 - AI Course section, there are 7 chapters. These are the classroom sections that the Instructor teaches and you follow along. The sections are things like an Orientation; Learning, Instruction & The PADI System; PADI Discover Scuba & Snorkeling Programs, stuff like that. This is where the instructor is teaching you to teach the PADI Way.
You must also do the skill circuit in the pool, do some teaching presentations, and do an 800m snorkel (not timed!).
I hope this is the info you were looking for. We just started and are meeting with our instructor one evening every other week. We will take a while to finish, probably about 3 months I'm guessing. There is more to it than I was originally led to believe.
Hope this is helpful!

I've never worked with our local CD, but from what I understand he follows the minimum standards style. While that is not my style, I can live with it for AI. The only reason I'm taking it is so that I can teach my DAN courses, it's an unfortunate fact that you can't sell DAN O2 without giving a PADI O2 Cert and you can't give a PADI O2 cert as a DM.
I know of two people who have done it in 3 days with him.
Hope this is helpful!
Extremely. I'll give it a closer look when I have a little more time, but it's exactly the info I'm looking for!

Well good luck Atlaua-
Its seems as if there may be a few of us on this board doing AI this year. It will be interesting to compare notes later on.

The AI course is the first half of the Instructor course. It is DM on steriods and some insturuction on teaching.
