There was a poor turn-out today for the annual Polar Bear dive in spite of a sunny clear day with mild temp (for Jan 1).

I estimate app. 35 divers total on site, with only app. 20 participating in the Noon event, some of them in wetsuits! A handful were also there for cert dives, mainly drysuit cert.

Air temp was around 40 F, water temp was 44 F, vis was 10-15 ft. Free soup, chili, and cookies were provided by the staff.

We missed you, and wish more would have joined in the fun.

Is this an annual event, open to the public? We were there in Sept. and fell in love with the place. I have always wanted to do a New Year's Day dive. Maybe next year.

We was going through there about 11;30, and I thought about stopping by, but I dont think my Henderson 5 mil would have done much for me. Glad you had a good time though.

Becky, yes, this is open to anyone who wants to come out. It really is a good time.

I had planned on being down there, but my kids kept me up all night and I had no one to drive down with...

Hopefully next year...

New Years day diving is a tough one. I think most people party to hard to commit to diving the next day, although noon is pretty generous.

We had a new years day dive here in Chicago with about a dozen divers. Of course the dive site isn't as fun as Mermet, but it's a great way to start out the year!

Where was that Burnham Harbor? I was at Mermet, but didn't bother with the photo-op dive. I'm now officially done with my divemaster certification (thank goodness).

Congrats. That's a great cert to get, and one that is well earned.
