Well, it's a done deal. I'm now a DiveCon. We finished up our training last weekend, but I waited to say anything until SSI processed my paperwork. So I've now, as one member of this forum so creatively worded it awhile back, gone to "the dark side."

Congratulations. Is a SSI Divecon the same as a PADI divemaster?

DiveCon is a combination of DM and Assistant Instructor, so it's the same as a PADI Assistant Instructor. We can teach the pool and classroom portions of the training under the supervision of an instructor and help with training in the open water. We can also teach snorkeling, Try Scuba sessions, and conduct scuba skills reviews for certified divers who need a refresher.

Cool! I'm 49276! And yes, DDBob's comment on your post was hilarious!
And yes, I'm already seeing that getting out just for fun dives is going to be a challenge, especially since I don't have a regular buddy. I'll do my best, though.

You will find yourself presented with many new potential buddies through helping with classes. Make sure you tell the students how important actual diving is to boosting their skills and offer to go with them.

Ah, good plan. Thanks for the advice! I'm open to any more advice you might have, too. :)
