Well I did it - I committed to finishing my Dive Con course in June. I have had the course material for awhile and just wasn't sure BUT I'm going to take the leap.
(Now I really am committed - it's in writing :) )

Good for you. Let us know your progress, will be interesting to see how it compares to the PADI program.

Best of luck with that. As we have discussed, I am sure you are going to do great.

I bought the Divecon material as well. I don't know when I will do it, but I wanted to read as much on it as possible. I do have a question, what is the swim? I have heard many different conflicting views on this...from 200 meters untimed to 800 meters timed. Congrats on finally going for it.

It actually is an abbreviation for Dive Control Specialist. And OzarkJim is correct it is similiar to PADI, NAUI etc. Divemaster, with a small difference Dive Con's are also an Assistant Instructor. 2 jobs in one certification. We can do Scuba Review, teach snorkeling, and possibly a couple of other specialities.

Thanks - I will check on "What is the swim?" I honestly do not know either right now. I know that some aspects of the course I am probably better off not knowing until I get there. :)

Actually as a PADI DM, I can do both of those, except I can only do reviews for non-certified divers and there are some limitations for "scuba divers". What I can't do (and this is just plain stupid) is issue a PADI O2 cert. The PADI 02 Cert coms from the DAN O2 Provider course, which I can teach. But I can't issue the PADI cert until I become an AI...which I will this summer.

Actually, a PADI DM cannot do the Scuba Review for non-certified divers. Quoting the PADI Divemaster Instructor Guide - "Conduct the PADI Scuba Review program for certified Open Water Divers or divers with higher certifications (provided the divemaster meets insurance requirements)."

Actually,
The PADI O2 course does not need to be based upon the DAN O2 Provider course. That may be the most common basis for the course, but it does not have to be. The PADI course is a distinctive specialty and as such an instructor that is applying to teach the course through PADI can easily defer to the DAN course as their basis but does not need to. That instructor can actually author their own course and submit it for approval. As long as the course meets standards, it would probably be approved.

I have changed my mind (a lady's right) :) - plus I'm really not wanting to do the course with Midwest Aquatics. There is another shop I hope to do it with. The real reason is my "real" job is going to be picking up.
