Dudes!

I cannot remember experiencing it this good at Mermet. In the shallow water, even around the training platforms and high traffic area, the visibility was as good as 30 ft.!! It did drop to about 15 ft. in some spots after enough (students) rototilled the bottom, but was still outstanding. (I put "students" in parentheses because there were quite a few certified fun-divers who I saw rototilling far worse than most of the students did!)

Also, water temp was a balmy 78 F all the way down to 20 ft.

The thermocline was rather thick and milky-looking, and then below that the water cleared up again even better than the shallow water.

Water temp at the nose of the plane was 56 F.

Along with beautiful warm-but-not-hot sunny weather and a group of 7 cooperative and personable students, it made for a better weekend than I can remember at Mermet for a long time.

It's too bad it isn't like that more often. I have two more divers in the family now that would like to go, but the viz reports I've been seeing make it tough to make the 8 hour trip down to dive it again.

Does it typically clear up towards fall?

Yes, it typically clears up toward Fall. But don't wait too long or the water will start to get cold again! Cold nights cause colder shallow water.

That's not all that gets cold.
Warning: May be too ugly for those with weak stomachs.

That's exactly what was going on, we had to get in the drink for the stuff to thaw.

That time at Mermet was nothing compared to the frozen gear we (I) had at Table Rock. I had to abort the dive, because I couldnt inflate the wing. Lesson learned, when it get down into the single digits at night, bring the wet gear inside.
