I'm looking for logbook covers for Chris and I. I read a thread saying many of you just log them on excel or other computer programs. But for those of us just starting and want to use the book, what do you suggest for a cover??

Scuba.com has one, but its not waterproof. Does that matter??

My logbook is where I can grab it at a seconds notice - fire or tornado.

I have one that had the 3 rings and zips closed. I got "credit card" plastic sheets that hold my c-cards. I still log my dives and hope I always will. Plus I add what the weather was like, weights I used, type of suit, where we stayed, ate, etc etc.

I haven't had a problem with it getting wet, even on a Live Aboard. I don't take mine out on a day boat.

Most dive shops carry them plus you can order them.

None of them are waterproof, none. Everything on a diveboat gets wet. I never take my logbook on a diveboat.

A simple binder from Wal-Mart makes a great logbook. Then, you can make custom pages that contain the info you are interested in. Not to mention, a fraction of the cost of the diveshop stuff. I keep two: one for rec dives and another for cave dives; although my page designs are quite different for the two books, I've found this is the best way to organize info. E.g. my rec log page has room for two dives on each page; after hundreds of dives my binder still has room for hundreds more. Some of the commercially prepared books will be full with fifty dives in it.

If you are going for a spiral notebook style you might like one that is waterproof. i tear out sheets to take underwater with me to record stuff during the dive (number of different creatures I see, species notes, etc.). I hadn't thought of it as a log book, but that's not a bad idea. different sizes, different designs, all 100% waterproof.

I use one called "Underwater Log: A Personal Diving History." It's from New World Publications, 1861 Cornell Road, Jacksonville, FL 32207. It's 8" x 5" with plastic sprial type binder. Each page is one dive and in addition to the usual blanks to write depth, temp, time, etc., it has 3/4 of each page blank for personal notes. At the bottom is a table of dive time info: current dive, total of all previous dives, new total. Easy to keep track of your total time underwater! I haven't been keeping up, the last time was 3-26-2004 and I had 20072 minutes underwater - a total bottom time of all dives logged (in these books). Each book is around 50-60 pages, for 100+ dives per book. cost is about $12.95. I take it on dive boats in a dry box and usually get it wet and it wrinkles up as I blow dry it when I get it back home. sometimes the ink runs and it's hard to make out what I wrote!

Ditto this for me too.

I just use the download software that came with my computer. It works well, and has a section for Notes to keep track of all the things you might want to keep track of. I quit keeping the paper version of a logbook after about 300 dives. I found I wasnt putting much info in them anyway. However, I think the logbooks are very important when first starting out. Even at 50 dives, I have entries in mine trying to fix buoyancy issues. And as mentioned earlier, I got tired of shelling out the money for log book refills once a month.

We keep ours in a zip lock bag with our dive gear when we travel. Not much of a cover, but it protects the book and keeps it handy where you are most likely to use it.

I'll agree with this. I also like to make a point to log when I switch gear in any way. Since every switch means a switch in weight, position of weight, etc. Course I make most of the notes on the computer program as well. Ran out of the pages that go in the log book itself and for some reason can't seem to remember to buy more of them. Perhaps I'll just make my own and print them out some day.
