Mermet Oct 27-28 Fun dive report

Scuba Sally and I spent the weekend diving Mermet. We went to participate in the underwater pumpkin carving contest and to enjoy one of the last weekends promising pleasant weather this year. Our pumpkin was a cut-out silhouette of a spoonbill, thanks to Sally's artistic talent with the knife and my dubious talent of being negatively buoyant enough to get the pumpkin down and keep it secure during the artistic process.

The viz was great, with 15 ft. viz in the shallow water and 20-25 ft. viz in the deep water, except for the very bottom of the deep end where it was only about 5 ft. Water temp was app. 65 F at the surface, and in the high 50s down to about 40 ft. depth, where it gradually got colder until the usual 42 F at the bottom. Lots of spoonbill were about, and the night dive was populated by many hunting bass. Due to this season's dry weather the quarry is about 4 ft. shallower than usual.

End of what season? Season starts Jan 1, and runs through Dec 31, with an optional overlapping dive at midnight.

I know that TS used to have a 12 month dive season. I guess this will be the first that SS has had a 12 month season. TS already got a few that will miss you this year. Eric from up yonder says hi. He and his son went to the dark side.

Even though this year the trip will be differant andd only a few days with the ole family down there and rest at Jackson Blue, it just wont be the same with you. I guess we have finally grown up and must part our ways. snif snif snif. Just like having a kid leave the house.

Great to hear that you had such a great time there at Mermet. Tell SS I said hi and we will be waiting for you all to make it back down.

OK, I should have put season in air quotes or something- I was using it figuratively and did not intend to imply that anyone actually stop diving.

Now we're getting off track- this thread is about Scuba Sally's ability not to cut his own finger off underwater and the Skull's amazing density that allows him to sink pumpkins that mere mortal men could use as a liferaft. :D

Dude,

SS has been diving year-round since she got her drysuit a couple years back, was doing the Mermet Polar Bear dives while you and I were diving the balmy waters of Telford and Cow springs.

BTW, you haven't lost a dive buddy, you've just lost a Xmas dive buddy. DDBob and I have a set of doubles with weak Trimix and will be looking for a date to dive the lower tunnel at RBD. Hope you can join us when we agree on a date. Will keep you informed of plans.
