Wonderful, the more the merrier. And rented gear is good for the diving industry! ;)

I dived Mermet today (Tue); the good vis survived the weekend. 20-30 shallow, 30-40 or better deep. I've made about 300 dives at Mermet, but I saw stuff today that I'd never seen before. Unless we get a flood, it should be very good for Saturday.

Well i'm looking forward to meeting those of you that are there. Can't wait to get wet again. Been out of the water too long. .and with a last name like Herring out of water is not good :)
Guess I should check out mermets site for directions to the quarry though. ...

I don't know how to get there from Kansas, but you are basically heading for the southern tip of Illinois, across the Ohio river from Paducah, KY. Mermet is on route 45 halfway between Metropolis and Vienna, the entrance is marked by a dive flag sign.

very simple. I am assuming you are coming in from I-70. Take that into St.Louis, and then follow the signs for 64. That will take you to Mount Vernon. From there, take 57 south to 24. I-24 to highway 45 towards Vianna. From there, just follow the signs. Its right off 45.

They rent gear and also sell the odds and ends that divers usually need in a pinch. I would guess that they don't have the Mares mask you are looking for.

MgicTwnger

Actually, they rent and sell most everything, although the selection of brands is limited. Whatever you forget, they have. On-the-spot repairs are terrific.

I'll likely stop in KC on the way out and see if I can pick up a couple if I don't find mine.. still looking. Going to tear the garage apart today. Think I have managed to piss wife off.. Well it was almost completely depressing. I showed up this morning nice and early. 830 or so. Checked the reserved board, found out we had number 40. Went over and dropped off my equipment and waited a bit. Then started blowing bubbles. All day long.. and low and behold no one showed up. Good thing I brought a buddy with me. Then as we are calling it a day I happen to ask PJ if she had any idea why none of the Midwest people showed up. OH they are here.... huh? yea they decided to switch pavilions... So for those of you I missed yesterday.. thats why!!! No one told me we switched. For those of you that I see tomorrow.. kewl, lets blow some bubbles.

Bummer! Sorry I missed you. There was such a crowd at Mermet, it's easy to see how a mixup could happen. I think we had about seven show up (not counting you guys). Three of us cut out mid afternoon; others were staying for more dives, including a night dive. I think a couple or three will be there tomorrow.

yes it was very busy. a ton of OW classes going on. Had the bottom kicked up really good in no time. But other than the huge crowd. and being a little slow on tank fills it was a good day. Really didn't feel that hot out and as most of us say.. any day underwater is a good day.
See some of you later today. The rest... perhaps another day..

Mermet is like a second home to me, but I surely enjoyed sharing home with those of you who made the trip to dive with us. Had some good dives with a few of you, and got to chat with the rest. So glad we had better-than-average visibility and water temps for y'all. Was 82 F all the way down to 28 ft., and that's right where the Spoonbills were hanging out all weekend begging to be seen.

I'm looking forward to diving Beaver Lake next year with some of my new friends.

Thanks to all those in attendance- I had a great weekend. It was a nice change of pace and good way to prove that we're not just cyberdivers. Kudos to Bill for stepping up and providing the pizza!

I made 5 dives this weekend and I think I got to dive with most people. On Sunday, I even got wild and crazy and dove my doubles with a wetsuit. Contrary to popular internet opinion, I did not spontaneously die, but indeed, I kinda enjoyed it.

For those of you that like conspiracy, intrugue, and drama: I think I figured out what happened to Ken's neckseal- I believe it was sabotaged by a Russian spy. Did all ya'll notice the guy on Saturday with the bright green banana hammock? I'd bet he was undercover from the Russian Navy. :D

OMG, I just recalled a suppressed memory from the dives at Mermet- On Saturday, I was diving with Ken and we were floating on the surface just before the dive. I noticed that his crotch strap wasn't buckled! It was floating around behind him and he asked for some help.

Where I come from, the proper response would be to deploy the knife, cut the crotch strap off and hand it to him, but I didn't think that would fly at Mermet. Sorry Ken, I did the best that I could, but obviously, I'm no substitute for the Russian Navy, although I did stay at the Metropolis Inn that night. :D

Its always wise to make sure Ken is secured tightly, incase he decides to send up a lift bag.
