After our first try at spear fishing in SD we took some advice from the locals and drove north and west to Peirre in hopes of finding better viz and more plentiful fishing. We drove up Saturday night after the tournament dinner - not planning to drive the entire distance but were unable to get a motel along the highway with Sturgis going on a couple hundred miles away.
Not too far from Pierre is Oahe Dam. There were three seperate campgrounds to chose from below the dam and we chose to set up in campground #3. We put the boat in that evening and headed to a point that was suggested to us. The water was a little rough so it took some doing to get the boat anchored up enough so we were assured it would be there when we surfaced.
The viz at this particular point was in the 8-10 foot range. After about 15 minutes in the water we spotted some carp and a small mouth bass that was my first (and only) fish. I gave the spear gun to Denise for her to try out and....don't you know, I see a very nice sized walleye but she's looking the otheer way. It turned out to be the only one I saw on the entire trip too.
We tried several other places on the resovoir but never found the combination of decent viz and fish. Again, finding viz is a knack that I would have to develope because it didn't come easy.
We were told that getting dropped off at the base of the dam and drifting down the river is quite a trip, but we didn't get an oportunity to give it a try....maybe next time.
All in all I would like to try this again but probably wouldn't use it as our once a year vacation without the kids.
