OKay, I am heading to Belize in 2 days for a week of diving with Peter Hughes. That is pretty cool in itself. I just recieved an e-mail from my trip rep, and she informed me Mr. Hughes himself will be joining us on this trip. I think that is going to be pretty cool. Maybe I can land me a job as DM down there, and get paid 150k a year to dive...okay, maybe not.
Anyway. I will try and keep a little journal of the trip, and post my trip report when I get back.

Okay, the whole journal thing sounded like a good idea, but it didnt happen. Sue me.
Let me start off by talking about the Sun Dancer II, and Peter Hughes himself. The vessel and the crew was outstanding. The meals was to die for. They even had a US Bar BQ on the 4th for us, with American flags all over the dining area, that was pretty neat. As I mentioned, Peter Hughes himself was on the boat with us this week. I was a little concerned that because he he was there, the staff might be a little more "buisness" like, but that wasnt tghe case at all. Mr. Hughes was a blast to talk to, and joke around with. We kept teasing him that if we didnt get something our way, we would have to go out on the Aggressor fleet on out next trip. The guy is a first class act.
Now for the diving. I have to say, the diving was just a big okay for me. The reefs looked really healthy and full, but the marine life wasnt what I was expecting. On any given dive, we would see squirrel fish, and all the other common little fish, but it was rare to see anything else. I think I only saw 2 green morays the entire week, and the spotted eels was pretty rare as well. We did have one dive where we saw 6 or 7 Eagle Rays, but that definitly wasnt the norm.
I know there has been a lot of talk about diving the Blue Hole, and different opinions on if its worth it or not. For me, I thought it was interesting, but this was the only dive of the week that was truely guided, so we couldnt just do our own thing. Dropped down to 130 foot (the max they would let us go), but with 16-20 people there, the exhaust bubbles was knocking a lot of setimnet off the walls on its way up, and you couldnt really appreciate the beauty of the rock formations caverns there. I saw a reef shark on my decent into the hole, at about 15 foot, but that was the only one I saw. I can say I have done it, but dont think its going to be on my list of things to do again any time soon. (I should also point out that the Blue Hole was dive number 600 for me. That was kind of neat.) Unless I can bring my doubles and a few stages with me, then I would like to go check it out again, but I dont see that happening anytime soon.
All in all, it was a fun trip, but not a place I think I am going to be burning to get back to any time soon, but that is not a reflection on Peter Hughes dive op at all. I will definitly be booking through them again.
I guess I should also mention that on Friday night, I popped the question, and she said yes, so those plans are now in the works as well.

That's the best way I've ever heard of spicing up a so-so diving trip. Congratulations and good luck!
