View Full Version : A sad day of diving

Well, the diving down here in Pompano has been better than I expected. Lots of variety, the reefs are remarkably healthy. I spent the last four days diving with South Florida Diving Headquarters. They're a great op, and even when the boat is fully loaded they let you dive your own profiles.

The second day of diving we ran into a site put a tear in my eye. We had just surfaced from our first dive of the day and a fisherman was running full speed towards our boat. The captain was yelling that he found a dead whale and wanted us to take a look at it. After the last few people got on board, we moved a few hundred feet north of the wreck we were diving and saw a dead whale shark. The captain dropped of an instructor and a photographer to see if they could figure out what killed it while he called the sheriffs department to get a boat out. Here's the story http://www.miamiherald.com/569/story/136628.html . The photographer was kind enough to email a few of his pictures on the promise that we would not sell them or publish them, but I think it's ok if I post them here. I should have them up in the next day or so along with some very amature attempts by my girlfriend and I.

Amature attempts at WHAT?

Definitly sad news about the whale shark.

These pictures were all taken by a photographer by the name of Joe Marino. Once again, these aren't my pictures so please don't post them anywhere else.

PS. He's a professional photographer, so his work is copyrighted.....so don't get me in trouble or I'll come by your house, slash your bc's and steal your tanks.

Sad indeed. This is just slightly off topic, but the Georgia aquarium has had some trouble of late. They rescued a Beluga from a bar in Mexico. Poor thing had been under a disco floor it's entire life. It was recovering but took a turn for the worse. Then they lost a whale shark.

They are getting a replacement for the WS but there has been a lot of controversy over it.

Hate to see a big fish die like that but maybe it was his time.

I tried to load some of my own pictures up, but they're all too large to load on the website. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to shrink them down (other than putting them in cold water) so I can post them?

Yea, I'm too tired to figure out what the max sizes are but if you hit the windows key (looks like a curly flag) and hit R you'll get the run box (assuming you are running windows). From there type pbrush and enter. That will get you the built in windows editor. Load the file and go to Image-Stretch/Skew. Try 50% for both horizontal and vertical and see if that works. If not, go smaller.

Ok, I finally had the chance to mess around with some of the images. Here are a few of them, and like I said, they aren't the greatest photos in the world.

Are those pictures of a whale shark or the one found dead?

The first ones are of the dead whale shark. The second group of pictures are ones that were taken by me and my girlfriend.
