I'm going to try and make it to Haigh. I'll start trying now: "Pleeeeeeeeze honey! Pretty please. It's not like I've been diving every weekend. Well, not every single weekend. Sure, I'd like to go with you to the #%*&^ mall......"

Hehe, I hated him as well once. He has a habit of "giving unrequested advice". When he did tha to me he became a thorn in my side. Then I took the IDC from him and found out the reasons. They are always good and he's ok if you set your personal risk levels lower.

It's a personality thing. You have to get to know him to like him. There are a lot who don't. I've been really happy once I got over the pre/mis-conceptions.

For me, its personal. I cant stand the guy. I go out of my way to avoid eye contact, or any kind of conversation with him of any kind.

Only met him once, when I was doing my Assist. Instructor simulations in the pool--his group was there the same time as ours so we all did our stuff together.

He made quite an impression on me when he lectured me that I could not be an effective instructor while wearing a back-inflate BC. Also took me to task for evaluating skills while hovering just off the bottom instead of overweighting myself and kneeling on the bottom.

I may (do) have deficiencies as an instructor, but complete control of my buoyancy and of my student are not among them.

I don't need no stinkin' IDC. Many of my best friends are instructors. I take their newly minted OW students out for their first fun dive while they are sitting at the picnic table filling out paperwork. :)

He hit me for using my long hose with students as a DM. I heard his reasons in my IDC and they made a lot of sense. (It involved an Instructor loosing a student (in the bad way) because he wasn't close enough to maintain control.

Do I listen to everything he says? Nope. I have my setup and my teaching setup but when I did OW students while on a shop trip, I only took my setup.

Is he ok with that, yea. Thing about TRCD is that he's knows about a lot of incidents that have happened and how they could of been avoided. He wants to help and it comes across the wrong way.

Like I said, I hated him and spent a lot of time trying to avoid him until I decided, what the heck, I'll do AI with him, I've heard good things from his students.

I'm not trying to change any opinions. You wouldn't have been able to change mine before I worked with him. I'm just saying I was right where you were and I had to re-evualuate the situation. Somewhere along the line I realized he was just like me. I.E. He knows a lot an want's to help people avoid mistakes but maybe doesn't know the best way to get that across.

James

P.S. Not to get back on subject or anything, but who might I get to see Saturday?

An instructor, and fer sure an instructor trainer, needs to learn the best way to communicate their intentions along with the content.

The long hose issue is a skill and judgment issue. When I share air with one of my cave buddies I hand off the long hose. When I share air with an OW diver I place the reg in their mouth and grab a handful of BC--if they were stupid enough to run out of air on a recreational dive they are going to do something else stupid, and when they do they are not getting away from me!

I wear the standard short hose in the pool for ease of demonstration, but I dive open water with the long hose. And really, the long hose config is no different from using one of those Air2 thingees other than I maintain complete control over my buoyancy while ascending during an air-share.

I agree. And he, and I hope I, do this well in a classroom setting. It's the overstepping his bounds that get's him in trouble...

Understood. The case in question didn't judge that well.

I'm ok with people not liking TRCD, and so is he. He's an "odd sort". I felt the same way you did until I worked with him. Like I said, I'm not trying to sway anyone. Just realize that we seem to share a lot of comon opinions and I wouldn't be working with him if he hadn't gained my respect.

I'm still trying to figure out what "TRCD" stands for. They don't teach you all the PADI acronyms 'til you learn the Instructor secret handshake.

I'll grant you that. I'm just saying that the bad things I had heard were more than confirmed when he was instructing me in the pool and had the chance to act professionally. Not that he should care what I think.

He got onto me one time working an OW class because I had my mask on backwards on the surface. He told me that is a tec thing, and I am working a rec class. Granted I have not been through every tech class, but the ones I have been in has never taught me to do that. I learned that from my OW class. I didnt listen to him though. He had already burned his bridge with me.

I had 2 close to OOA a few weeks ago, and had my long hose both times, and also had a very good hold of the student I was with. She didnt get away. Then again, she didnt want to. I had the air.

Back to the point in hand, I would say 80% chance I will be there this weekend.

Oh yeah, this is a discussion of who is diving Mermet this weekend.

I will not be there--have a funeral service to attend out of town.

I will be at Mermet the following weekend, though. Will be assisting with a very large OW class, so fun diving will be limited. Sure glad I had this entire past weekend for fun diving at Mermet--viz was fabulous everywhere deeper than 45 feet!!

Everyone has valid issues and opinions about "Drysuit Mike". James hit it on the head - He is Ok once you get to know him. When he oversteps, smile and tell him to mind his own business. He really does care, he just seems incapable of communicating that.
