Tony and I did a few fun dives at Haigh this past Sunday (April 29). It was a beautiful day for diving. Water temps ranged from a toasty 45F to an egg sizzling 50F. Viz is bad considering it is still early in the year. I'd say 20' in the shallows. The Flamingo was totally mucked up. Couldn't even see through it. Just think, it was only two months ago there was 75'+ of viz under the ice. If the viz doesn't get any better, it will be a long year for those who enjoy diving at the quarry.

I was just thinking about the vis yesterday. (this will be a long story, so zone out now) A few years ago, I did a dive at Pearl Lake in April or May, and I was amazed at the 30' vis there. I had been diving there a lot the previous summer and had gotten used to the 5'-10' vis. When it opened up to 30', I thought that I was seeing a part of Pearl Lake that I had never seen before.
Flashforward to yesterday- when I was diving at Haigh, the vis reminded me of that dive in Pearl- objects that were 25' feet away were just ghostly shades of gray. Duane almost seemed disgusted with the vis; I think that we were just spoiled by the clear, bright water that we found during our ice dives.
I did see a few things that I hadn't seen before. Usually the vis is a silty, mungy kind of haze, but yesterday, there were bigger pieces of debris that were just floating around. At one point, there were all these little clumps of debris floating around in little patches- it reminded me of those pictures of Jellystone Lake that has all the non-stinging jellyfish, but instead of jellyfish, it was silt clumps and instead of warm clear water, it was friggin 48f. But I think that you get the idea. At any rate, I saw some fish that were chomping on silt or dirt and left a bunch of clumps floating around. I suspect that the vis was funky because of the fish, but I don't have any actual proof.
(I told you this was long. Someone wake up Ken!)
So all in all, it was a pretty fun dive. I did get to measure my SAC rate, which is in the .42 range. I guess that's not to shabby. I'd love to measure it in warm water with a single tank someday. :D

I did that when I was in Australia, and I was in the .32-.37 range.

Thanks for the report. We are going out with two Open Water Students this weekend. They are anxious to go. I think its a little chilly for students in wet suits, but these two seem heartier than most and I think it will be a good time. We will also be at a 1:1 ratio which won't keep anyone warmer, but will keep things safer.
Anyone else going to be at Haigh this weekend?

When you say "Haigh", do you mean Mexico? Cuz that's where I'm going. I'm almost ashamed to admit it. I'll try to stay out of the saltwater, but at this point, my options are limited. :D
Have fun!

Hi-
Welcome to Midwest Dive!
Do you know we have another member here with the same screen name. He is a cold water diver though and hates salt water and any body of water warmer than 60 degrees.
Have a good trip though and post a report when you get back!

Hi Duane-
We plan to be there both days. I think since gas is now over $3 a gallon, we will be economical and drive the tannish colored Camry down. With the students on day 2, we will probably be set up on the grass, but close to the middle dock. If you are nearby, please stop by and say hello.

Ohh, last weekend, large parts of the lawn were roped off and had some sort of grass-growing covering on them. There is still plenty of space on the lawn for this time of year.

If i DO drink the tap water, it would certainly remind me of home. The last time I was at Haigh Quarry, the water looked like what happened to me that last time I was in Mexico. (If you catch my drift).
