View Full Version : Midwest Dive Get together?

Are we going to try and schedule another Midwest Dive get together this year? I know we had one 2 years ago at Mermet. I dont think we ever got one together for last year.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I dont know. We have members from Kansas and SW Missouri on here too. Not to mention Kentucky.
St.Louis would be a good middle area, but there is nothing to dive here.
Mermet seems to be a good middle ground, and seems to have worked well last time. Any objections to Mermet?

This should help:

Basically it's at the southern tip of Illinois about 12 miles north of Metropolis, which is across the Ohio river from Paducah, KY. In other words, it's in the the sticks.:D

Divers are divers, all should come. But yes, the non-tech divers should bring the pizza, because the rest of us spent all our money on tanks, mixed gas fills, computers, and all kinds of redundant stuff.
Only kidding. Please come and join us. BBQ is available on site.

I am going to jump in here with a suggestion...
Portage quarry Legends of diving, 2 week end in August. There are hotels close by, there is camping at waters edge, there is good diving; large friendly fish, a sunken jet, and other objects.
The Legends is just that... a complete week end with people who made the sport what it is today;
**ZALE PARRY Miss diver! worlds first world record depth holder, Sea hunt actress, etc etc.
**SAM LECOCQ, designer of the single hose regulator and about 30 or 40 others. Founder of SportsWays etc
**ALEX PIERCE World class expert on Sea Hunt and has the worlds largest collection of Sea Hunt junk.
****a fellow named MILLER who was born Evansville
recognized as a world class dive historian.
All of these folks are in 70s & 80s and were there at the very beginning ot recreational diving...this might be you last chance to meet and greet them.
FYI PORTAGE QUARRY is located in Ohio.

At Mermet, right? Not Ohio?
Mermet has a BBQ vendor on site during the prime season on weekends. Pizza is 12 miles away, not too bad a drive, but will not deliver. Most of us get a BBQ sandwich or burger or polish dog and bring side dishes and snacks with us.

Sure do. It is a valuable tool if used within its limitations and practiced with to know what it will do for you. It served me well for a couple years until my tech diving required the acquisition of and practice with larger redundant sources. I would have hydroed it and kept it if I didn't now own sets of doubles and stage bottles of various sizes.

Is a trip to Mermet worth a 9 1/2 hour drive? I could argue that it is, at least to dive it once.
Is it worth it if you also get to meet and dive with some of your on-line pals? To this I would say YES!
In late August it will be possible to comfortably dive Mermet in a wetsuit with hood--at least deep enough to explore the 727 plane and swim by all the major attractions and see some Spoonbill Paddlefish. By then the shallow water will be near 80 F and the second thermocline will have been pushed down to 40 feet or so. Hope you decide to join us.

I've been given some "harrasment" by one of the mods here because I've never commented on this thread.
Truth is I was disappointed by the turnout on the last get together. It was 3 of us and a forth who was there working classes. I also wasn't thrilled to see it go back to Mermet. That makes things really tough for our frinds in Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, etc.
You'd think as geographically specific as this board is it would be easy to plan a get together but, alas, the Midwest covers a lot of ground.
Anyway I would have rather seen us move the location for the second get together but I sat back and watched and let it play out. Truth is my inlaws are having a 50th anniversary about that time. I'm not sure if the dates overlap or not but if they do, I'm afraid I'll have to put staying married over this get together. If they don't then I'll be there with bells on.

Its not that much shorter for me. I'm a little ways south and west of you. Perhaps if you want to go and I decide to solo drive it we can meet up in KC or something and share the ride there. Would help with the cost of gas and make it easier if there are a couple of us.

Fair enough, but since the first meet and greet, the board has exploded with new active members. I skimmed through that old thread, and it looked like only a handful of people committed for that weekend anyway, so I'm not too sure what kind of turnout you was expecting. Last time was also conflicting with another shops event. Granted, you cant please all of the people, all of the time. As far as the location, that was put out there for discussion as well, and nobody objected to Mermet. I looked into trying to shift it out west this time, but the only 2 places that really stick out is Table Rock, and Blue Water lake. Table Rock would be okay, but it looks like we are going to have a great turnout, and parking is very limited down there. Plus I like the idea of having airfills onsite for those that need it. And Blue water lake, I wasnt all that impressed with the diving the one time I was there. Plus, I dont like the idea of paying extra to dive my doubles. And I know there is quite a few of us that will be diving doubles.
Hopefully, we can make this work , and keep the majority of people happy, and all have a good time. Maybe next year, some of our westerly folks can arrange one in their back yard.

Once you break the 45 foot range, things really opened up. I'd say there was more than 20 feet once you got that deep. Shallower was definately bad though. I think it was a combination of the recent rains, the number of classes in there and an algae bloom.

I'm going to pass this time - 600 miles one way is just a bit too far this time. One of these day's I'll make it though.

Unfortunately we won't be able to make it either. The 9 1/2 hour drive each way wasn't too appealing, but now we have relatives visiting that weekend. Hope we can join you all one of these days. Have fun!

Maybe I should rerun the poll again, see who will be there. Its getting pretty cheap for pizza man Bill with everyone dropping like flies. If I'm forced to buddy up with Ken, I might have to drop, too.

You did, but against my better judgement, I'll go anyway. Besides, I have to to get the free pizza and beer!
If anyone wants to carpool from Chicago, shoot me a PM. I have a small car and big tanks.

I have just been informed that our team had mandatory training 8/25-26...seems we're going to be moving cars around/ out of a quarry...so I won't be coming to Mermet...I can't go diving because I have to go diving...

That is almost funny...
Okay, question everyone. .Where exactly are we going to meet up at? It is looking like I won't get in till around midnight Friday night, so I guess its going to be at the Quarry on Saturday morning? I've never been there and i'm sure there are a couple of others that have never been there as well.. So is there anyplace in paticular we are going to meet up? Only 2 more weeks.. :D

I have reserved a pavilion. When you sign in at the front office, look on the wall behind them for the Midwest Dive group, or ask for me, Ken or Bill. They all know us well. They will send you to the right pavilion.

OK it's slow at work and I just sat here for the past hour reading all these post from last summers plans for the big get together. So, what happened? Did everyone have a good time? Is there more on another thread about all the big events? Was there enough beer for Tony?

we had a good time, but it was a hassle to set up. People commit, then back out. You schedule it way ahead of time, and people saythey cant schedule that far in advance. So you wait a little longer, and they say they need more notice. We went from a huge turn out, to a few, and I think we wound up with 5-10 people showing up, if memory recalls correctly.

Yup, that's the way it went down- but that just means more beer and pizza for those that show up! And Bill was kind enough to buy my favorite kind of pizza- FREE!!
I guess if we have another get together, it'll be Brett's turn to buy pizza! :D

I enjoyed it even though it was small, perhaps even more because it was small. And I saved alot of money on pizza due to the low turnout! We had a good time diving and chatting and making fun of each other's stroked-out equipment choices. :)

And if I remember correctly from a couple years ago its not half bad.
Okay.. guys/gals.. Been out for a bit.. to much work and no play is making Dale a dull guy... not to mention these 100+ hour weeks are starting to take their toll on me.
Perhaps this time we can make sure the office knows if we move shelters?

Okay.. apparently my browser acted funny... or I'm just tired.
Are we doing a meet and greet and dive this year? Has anyone decided on a date/place? Mermet worked, other than it was a 8 hour drive at least and with current gas prices.. that would kind of suck. Atop of the fact that their was a million students there a couple of years ago.
However this year I am going to cheat and combine it with work so I may have to bum a ride from the closest parking :)

Now that's a fabulous idea! The food and air fills are already free (but please make a donation anyway).
Sept. 13-14. I'll be there.

I will be at Mermet that weekend for the Dive Rite Tech tour representing the shop. I'm doing a lot of that this year.

Darn! Who would schedule a Tech Tour to conflict with Project Aware!?! I'd like to attend one of those, but ya gotta have your priorities.
