I'm putting together an ice diving course for this winter. The classroom portion will be somewhere in the Chicago area. The dives will probably be at Lake Wazee in Black River Falls, WI since Haigh Quarry hasn't had ice diving the past couple years. Diving under ice puts you into a very extreme situation. The cold air and water makes you more susceptible to hypothermia, can cause regulators to free flow, and can cause other equipment to break more easily. For these reasons, I strongly recommend that you take a hard look at your diving abilities and comfort levels in the water. I have no problems rejecting any student(s) who cannot show good diving abilities and sound judgment. Due to travel requirements, there will be no refunds once we are at the dive site. I would recommend you have logged at least 50 hours of bottom time, with 100 hours of bottom time preferred. Dry suit proficiency is strongly recommended.
What will you learn? This course will focus on gas management and line awareness as well as the standard ice diving curriculum which includes hole management, line communications and tending, and environmental concerns. There will be three dives over two days. The Advanced Open Water (or higher) course is a prerequisite for the ice diver course. Even though this is a PADI course, it isn't your typical PADI course. You will get more than the standard course outline. If there is enough time on the second day, we'll do a fun ice dive or two.
My target dates are the weekends of January 27 and February 3. Everything is, of course, dependent on the ice conditions. I require a minimum of 4 students, with a maximum of 6. You can PM me or contact me through my website linked in my signature if you are interested or have any questions.
