I just received this email from good friend Ed, although I am sure most of you received it too:
I met with the corp of engineers today and they are most likly going
to give a permit to build a set of steps from the parking lot down to
the spring.. Good news--- They are willing to furish the material.
Bad news----We have to provide the labor.... More as it developes...
Did not dive but the water movement on the surface did not look as bad
as a week ago last monday...Lake depth is up six feet though..

What area are the stairs planned for? The entire hill or just the area near the lake?

To start with it will be what they will let us do. I would like to try to get some good steps down at the lake first but we will have to work with how the Coprs will let us and the design of the steps. Maybe we can start with some simple steps in places and just take the time to add to them.
I am to meet up with Ed Saturday and we are to discuss this and many other things. I will keep you all posted on how things are going.

Like I said in the email, I am more than hapy to provide labor, since I plan on using those steps for many years.

I'll sign up to get my Intro Step Building Certification. I have a shovel and know how to use it. Currently I have to stay within direct sight of the entrance to the cooler, but I am rated on redundant delivery systems. (Bourbon and beer for example.)

The latest message over on the cave divers list was by a guy who was not in favor of putting in steps. Myself, I can take 'em or leave 'em. While the footing is a bit unstable going down the hill, I haven't heard of anyone actually falling. At the end of the day, we're still gonna have to climb that hill, with steps or without.
The hill, sort of, adds to the overall experience, and I do like the natural setting.
Edit: A flush toilet would be nice.

From my understanding with talking to Ed is the steps are going to mostly be more for erosion control and not at the lake edge. They do not sound like they will be anything like what you see at Peacock. Mostly a step every 10-15 feet that is mostly just a 6x6 that has bee laid down and some rock to backfill. I just think anything that we can do that the goverment is willing to help is a small step in the right direciton. We still have to kind of lay out the design and get it approved.
