Spent this weekend on a houseboat on Bull Shoals Lake with a great group of guys and gals (and excellent cooks!). The lake turned over just over a week ago, so the shallow visibility was less than normal at about 10 feet, but this should be clearing up in the next couple weeks. The water temp is 70 F from the surface all the way down to 45 ft. deep!! Below this thermocline the water temp is 57 F, and at 80 ft. it drops down to 50 F, which is good at least down to 128 ft. The visibility at depths of 70-100 ft. is a terrific 20-30 feet, depending on whether you are in the channel or a cove. The fish are rather scattered since the first thermocline is so deep, but we saw plenty of bass, bluegill, and walleye, and some scattered catfish and croppie. Weather was perfect.
Also, due to an unfortunate “fall” off the top of one of the houseboats, we experienced a very well coordinated water rescue and first aid exercise, which featured using a SCUBA fin as a make-shift splint for a dislocated elbow. The injured party got put back together the same night at a local hospital and is recovering nicely. Just goes to show you never know when you’ll need to use your Rescue Diver and EFR skills.
