View Full Version : Melting Problem

We'll I have officially completed my save a dive kit, now I'm wondering how in the world am I gonna keep the Beeswax I just bought from melting in that hot tropical sun?
It's in bar form & I figured I'd just put it in a plastic baggy unless someone has any suggestions for another type of container to keep the wax from melting.
This one's got me puzzled

Why would bees wax be in your Tropical save-a-dive kit? What use does it have other than waxing the zipper on a drysuit?

oops! Don't you need to wax your zippers on the other suits to keep them from being corroded in the salt water or what if they get stuck. Am I being a dummy here?

Nearly all SCUBA equipment zippers (other than drysuits or some semi-dry suits) are nylon-ish materials that do not need lube at all. You can give them a spray of silicone if you like, which may make them a little smoother, but corrosion is not a problem. Give the suit a fresh water rinse after diving salt water, but that is more for the neoprene than the zipper anyway.
No, you're not being a dummy. These kind of questions are why we're here . . . that and a long night in a hotel room in Iowa!

Take a day off, James. Have some balance in your life.

Balance? The alternative is beeing a jungle gym for a 2 year old who has no idea that certain areas are not a good place for a 30 lb body slam with a knee....

I love when you make people from SB cry.

Nah, I'll let them be for a bit. Since they can't keep the board up for more than an hour they have no way to share the information and mount an assult. Where's the fun in that?
Besides, my daughter's in bed now so I need some time to lick my wounds and see if I can get my voice back down to it's normal octave.

Sorry for the hijack Scubacat.
I keep some wax in my save a dive kit and it hasn't melted on me yet. It's not pure beeswax but rather some pricey concotion with a scuba flag on the label.
I went to Bass Pro Shop and bought a soft sided tackle box. It has 4 divided plastic cases inside that are great for storing o-rings, tools, etc. It also has pockets on the side that hold all sorts of stuff, including the wax. It's spent many hours locked up in my car with no meltage.

My drysuit zipper. Though I have to say that if it wasn't for the fact that the inflator tends to do skin damage without undies, I'd just dive the shell for warmer waters. It's that whole, 1 suit for all seasons thing.

Diving the shell isn't bad. I've done it several times when working OW classes at Mermet or Bull Shoals. Didn't want to pack both wet and dry suits, but wanted to make some good deep dives in the cold water after suffering through the bottom-kneeling. :)
I wore bicycling tights under the shell to keep my skin from contacting the inside of the suit. Boy oh boy do you need a lot less weight without the undergarments--my first attempt was comical.

I'll admit, I still don't have enough time on the drysuit to have it down pat. I had some isssues at first with floaty feet late in the dive that just wouln't go away no matter how vertical I got.
I added a a couple of pounds and they went away but I'm still wary of putting too much air in the suit. So, when I dive it with just a t-shirt the inflator valve leaves quite an indent. Enough to tear the skin. I put enough in so it doesnt hurt but still...

Forgive me but your little one's aim did give me a chuckle - is the voice back where it should be?
What about a bar of soap box for the bees wax? They lock pretty tight. I like the idea of a soft side tackle box too - I just have a pelican box and everything slides around in it.

Beeswax? You should be using Christo-lube to lube the zipper and Simple Green to clean it. :D Let simmer and stir occasionally.
Otherwise, what the Skull said... I keep a stick of wax in my tool box. It's just twisted up in saranwrap, like a tootsie roll. It gets gummy on the inside, but it's not the melted blob I expect it to be. I think that wax has a pretty high melting point. If I had a good thermometer, I would test it out for you. I suppose you could leave it in a hot car and see what happens...

Save a dive kit....I had one of those. TSA in SanJuan decided they needed it worse then I did. I suppose I should replace all that stuff. Fortunately nothing has broken for a long time.

Must be a big black market for beeswax in San Juan! LOL.
The security goons wrecked one of my regulators on my return trip from Turks and Caicos. Now I carry those on with me.

Ok, I hate to add injury to insult but you dove out of SJ?
When I went to the PR I asked around. I got the best dive op and the best diving I think is possible there. I also got the worst place to stay. It wasn't just the hotel (which was really, really bad) but it was the town. It is a weekend retreat and a fishing village. During the week, it shut's down. We had to drive at least 40 minutes to find a meal.
I'd recomend the dive shop in a heartbeat but otherwise, it was scary. $200 a night for an 8x8 room with no view and roaches.
We had to fly back out of SJ so our last night was booked at a very small hotel there. After 1 night in the parador we decied to rearrange an book the SJ Marriot for our last night.
So my trip was a great week of diving and bad room/meals, then 1 night of a great hotel and many great meal options with no diving.
I have to ask, because I've never heard a good thing about it. How's the diving in SJ?

With the current regulations, I plan on carrying only my clothes (no gell insoles) and my id. Anthing else will get checked. Things have gotten silly in airport security. I'd hate to be faced with the decision: do I give up an $800 reg or a $3000 trip.

James,
I wasn't diving in San Juan. I was only attempting to pass through. American cancelled our flight to St. Lucia. They put us up in the wonderful Best Western at the airport. While we were trying to get the rooms AA promised us the ceiling above the hotel front desk fell in and things only got worse. Skipping the gory details I got a bottle of detangler out of my kit the next morning. Then we checked out and checked our luggage for the flight. When we arrived in St.Lucia I unpacked. My save a dive kit and one dive boot were missing. Next time I'm in SJ I'll be lookin for a one legged baggage handler!
Joe
BTW I don't carry beeswax.

They apparently disassembled it. Punctured the diaphragm and ruined some other components.

I flew a few days after all this came down, and I still carried my reg, back up reg and computer with me on board. I didnt realize it until after we had left Bonaire, and then left Houston, but I had a little container of Carmex in my bag that nobody ever said a word to me about. One more reason why I saw this country is just asking for another major attack..
But back to the bees wax. I have had a stick get mighty soft on me, but never a complete melt down. Like TS said, I only use it on my dry suit, so now, I just leave it on the shelf at home.

Now about that Beeswax. Darn, what was I thinking? :o I don't think I'll be diving w/a dry suit anytime soon, so does anyone have any suggestions what I can do w/a $10.00 bar of beeswax?

hehehe, don't know where this thought came from, but I also thought the Beeswax would make for a very good vodoo doll. :D
