We'll be in the Milwaukee area for the WI State fair and will (hopefully) be able to sneak in a day of diving. Does anyone have any suggestions for an day at Lake Michigan? I would like to keep it above the mid 50's for temps if possible.

This also happens to be our anniversary...though we didn't realize this when we first started looking into this...

I've been looking at some info...there is the Len-Der charter that goes out in the morning. Anyone know anything about this??

The Len-Der is a good operation. Jerry will literally give you the fins off his feet to make sure you have a good dive. Does it say which wrecks they are doing? If you find out, we can give you a little more info.

Ditto on Jerry and the Len-Der. Temps above 50 might be a problem, though. I'll be on board with a group from Mermet on the 19th.

I'm OK with cooler temps but the Mrs. doesn't tolerate it as well. Mostly we were hoping that the dives would be in the shallower water.

I know you guys were talking about doing Pearl Lake - it's warm . . . only about an hour west of Milwaukee on Interstate 43. Let me know if you go, I could use some buddies for my compressed air therapy or be an extra buddy too.

Mike :)

I would say just about anything in the big lake under 35ft. will be in the mid 50's or below.

Jerry from Len-Der just got back to us and we are set to dive 2 dives. One will be the Willem and the other will be not quite as deep...around 70 feet...but not sure which wreck.

Pearl was definitely our backup plan...

It looks like a fun way to introduce ourselves to the Lake...I'm hoping the boat trip doesn't do me in though...

Denise-

Are you susceptible to sea sickness? If so, do you usually take anything for it?

I have only been on a boat once and that was in the Gulf of Mexico. I did take one dramamine, but I guess I should have taken two. I thought I would try the Bonine?? and see if that works better this time. I think I read that some take one the night before and then the morning of.

Yes, Bonine, one the night before and one the morning of the dive is the normal method. I don't know about anyone else, but it always makes me tired, even though its supposedly non-drowsy.

You could always try to get your doctor to write or call in an Rx for scopalamine patches too. Those work well and seem to be the popular choice these days.

Scubaba's article hyperklinked in the previous post gives some interesting info on the choices. It was pg 10 on the link newsletter i believe.

PS Thanks Scububa for the article!

Scopalamine patches are the only thing that works for me, and I've tried them all.

I use the patches too - I don't leave home without them. I have never been sick but once and I don't think anything would have made a difference on that trip

Yes, most definately take the night before & morning of. Just to make sure it is in my system good. I take 2 Trip Tones the night before & 1 Trip Tone the morning of. When I do this, no matter what the conditions, I don't puke in the reg like I used to.;)

Who does? It's just part of getting older.
An important point that no one has mentioned is to puke over the side, never in the boat. This really irritates captains for some reason.

That's what I do with generic Bonine, and so far so good. But I have been lucky with wave conditions lately.

I've been experimenting with drugs lately- the last time I tried to boat dive, I took half a pill of meclizine (less drousy Bananamine) the night before, and the other half the morning of the dive. Due to some bad kharma with the dive gods, I wasn't able to dive, but I did feel sleepy when I got home, so I suspect that it was working.

If I were doing a few days of boat diving, I would take one the first night before, and then just in the mornings for the subsequent days.

Here's a couple of hints:

Don't forget to apply it the night before, they take 8 hours to be effective. I find they stick better if you wash and dry the area you will be sticking it on.

Be careful donning and removing your hood: I've lost a couple of patches that way.

What a great weekend!

The scop patch worked great! I did lose it after the first dive, I'm sure it was while I was taking off my hood. I kind of forgot about it. Since we could see land from the boat the whole time, I just kept my eye on it and was just fine.

We were supposed to dive on Saturday, August 12, but the Lake was against us. The waves were 4-5 feet, so it was cancelled. We found out there was a local quarry, Lannon Quarry, so we thought we'd check it out. After about 20 minutes, we called that dive too. It was mucky, dark and cold. So we caught up on some sleep while Lyle's sister took our kids to the Zoo.....

Sunday morning, the Lake is somewhat calmer. We head out on the Len-Der to the Willy...however, one of the other boats had gone out the day before and pulled the moorings off the Willy. So we headed out to the Dredge. We had to wait for another dive boat, but they said they would try and find some moorings at the Willy with some rope and bottles the Len-Der gave them. This was a nice dive and thanks to the easterly winds that messed up Saturday's dive, it was a balmy 64 at the bottom. I was thrilled!

Once we were all up, we headed back to the Willy. They found one of the moorings, so we hooked up once they were done and down we went. This was an awesome dive for someone who's never done anything like it before. There is a lot to see, and again the bottome temp was 66 at 87 feet. WOW! I couldn't have asked for anything better than that!

Glad the scop patch worked.
And I told ya so about taking off your hood.:D

The Willie is the one of my favorite dives. I've dove her for years and it never gets boring. I'll be there this Sat. on the Len-Der with a group from Mermet.
