I FINALLY got my c-card the other day, and I find it very strange there is not a picture on it. Have I just been brainwasher by PADI thinking everyone does this, or is this normal?

Part of the PADI history was the marketing strategy of being the first agency to offer PICs, Positive Identity Cards, which was their original claim to fame and the decision they credit with propelling them into being the overwhelming market leader. Given the choice, folks preferred having a card with their picture on it. And PADI promoted the PIC as being more "official" since it truly identified the person who was certified.

NAUI never got that memo. My NAUI open water card has no number or picture. Just my name and the instructor name and number.

I did not know that. Thank you for that little history lesson there.

I guess honesty and integrity is the only thing that would stop me from giving my card to someone who wasnt certified (and that I didnt like.)

I believe I learned that lesson in the PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving (CD version), which also had an excellent section on the history of SCUBA's early pioneers and celebrities, such as Lloyd Bridges, the first female instructor, etc. Good reading.

PADI does get some things right. Actually, they get a LOT right. It's just irritating that the things they get wrong they get so very very wrong. ;)
