We were out on the wreck of S. S. Wisconsin again yesterday. We replaced the midship mooring. Now we have a mooring at the bow and on the port rail halfway back. Both are good, strong moorings. We will try to get the stern mooring replaced next weekend.
Just a reminder to those diving the wrecks in Lake Michigan. Although only a few of us install and service the moorings, they are there for everyone to use. Just be courteous. Keep a watch on your radio if you are on a wreck so other boats can hail you. If you arrive at a dive site, and another boat is arleady there, hail them and find out if there are divers down before getting too close. If you are tied up and there is no mooring left when another boat arrives, offer to throw them a stern line. Finally, lets make this a fun and safe season.

Captain - what kind of certifications are required for diving the Great Lakes/Wrecks? My husband is an experienced diver (diving since 1969) but has never gotten any more than his open water certification.

Thanks
Becky

Certifications are less important than experience in diving. I would rather have someone on my boat who has no more than an entry lever card but a couple of hundred dives in the Great Lakes than an instructor who has never dived anywhere but in the tropics.

Here here. Experience is HUGE but is hard to judge. I've seen the worst divers in the world tell great stories topside. Cert's are not a very good way to judge a diver but they beat stories, if only marginally. Dive count's are not much better. 200 dives in the same quarry or in the caribean, make you are advanced in a specific environment. A rescue card means you've done ~15 dives. Most dive good dive ops take new customers to easy sites and judge experience for themselves before deciding what that customer can handle.

You can take that to the bank. Dale is one of the best.
C'mon out and see what it's about, Becky. When you see a fantastically preserved piece of history appearing out of the green as you go down the line you'll know you ain't in Kansas any more.

I am looking forward to taking all my c-cards and experience up there in a few weeks. I am even getting a P-valve installed this week just for the occasion!!!!!

The better to pee on the wrecks?
Mark your territory?
If you drink some phenolphthalein and your urine is alkaline, you could leave a trail of red for your buddies to follow.

Assuming the valve works.
Dale is not impressed by a lot of c-cards, but something like that would do the trick.
