Well you might reduce your sac rate by taking the escalator.

I am sure that the escalator is only for Navy Officers, I was In the Marine Corps and Army but never the Navy. Hey, How do you tell the difference between a Navy Pilot and God? God doesn't think he's a Navy Pilot. JK JK;)

That did strike me as being very odd though.. an escalator on a carrier built in the 1940's. Are Escalators common on Navy Ships? I have been on a few Navy vessels but I have never seen an escalator.

"More on the "Big O'", indeed. I read the subject line to the thread and thought, now that is going to build traffic! What, then, do I find the thread is about? Not this, (http://www.nabiscoworld.com/oreo/) but a discussion about some decrepit scow about to be abandoned to the deep. Snore.
At the risk of seeming contrarian, what's all the excitement with scuttles? A big hunk of junk on the bottom, no story, no drama, and scrubbed clean of any and all hazards - this isn't wreck diving. Diving scuttles is like going to Disneyland to see what castles look like. Oooh. Aaah. No, thanks, Mickey. ;)

Generally speaking, I've got to go along with Steven on this one. A big part of the attraction for me is that Fate put the wreck on the bottom. The chance to explore an almost undived wreck last week was a real kick: looking around with a curious eye and trying to figure out what it was I was seeing. I've been lucky enough to have had this experience twice in the last year and those dives have been among my favorites.
That said, sinking stuff to make artificial reefs in the ocean makes sense to me and are nice dives. And artificial or not, the Spiegel was a terrific dive. Not quite a "Big O", but plenty of fun.

I guess I look at it as sort of an underwater museum. Yes it isn't in its original fighting condition, but it also wasn't cut into scrap. I enjoy viewing military artifacts in museums and reading about history, I guess I think this is just an untraditional approach to preserving military history. Wrecks get to the bottom by many means. I think we are fortunate this one didn't end up there prior to retirement.;)

LOL - Maybe there is more to this future wreck than you realize!

Oh good, I'm not the only one with that problem. Go figure, I'm subbing in a 5th grade classroom and they blocked it. It's good to know some things are still sacred in schools.:)

A very big uh-"O". Heh, he says, sheepishly. Sorry if that one was too blue, though I don't think there was any skin showing and thought, on that basis, it might pass muster as an "R" rated joke.
Is it possible for the rabble to edit our own posts if we think better of something we've said, rather than having to rouse the overlords?

2 more days until the sinking. Any idea how long after sinking it before they start running charters to it?
juls64
May 15th, 2006, 10:53 AM
I haven't seen charter dates, only that charter boats are now booking for it. Seems like $145 for 2 dives is what I've seen. The DS people are grumbling about someone wanting to charge more for tech divers. The reasoning is that with more of their gear, there will be less divers on the boat.
Anyway, it looks like the boats are ready to get the divers out there!

I am going to be in Florida June2-10, and I want to dive it for sure. I am guessing they will sink it, and then give it some time to settle before running charters out to it. I dont know how long they usually wait for something like this. I am like a kid on Christmas eve about this.

I have heard that charters will run the day after they sink it. I would have thought that there would need to be some settling but I guess not.

I dont care about having a guided tour, but I will be pissed if I pay 145 bucks for 2 dives, and I am climbing back on the boar with 1400 PSI left in my tank.

I read somewhere that the guided tours part was for divers without AOW or with less than 20 dives. I also read that gloves were required.

My normal dive buddy is calling around down there to get the "official" scoop. I like the idea of no tours.
I dont mind the gloves rule. I can always get a 1.5 mil pair of reef gloves.

Sounds like that's the one for you, Bob. You can come up with 2500 in your tank.

She has sunk. She is on the bottom.
Apparently they have cameras onboard as she wen down, too. That will be interesting when that is released.
Navy divers are checking her out now, and will be checking on how she went down, and if she settled correctly. No report back from them yet that I have seen.
48-72 hours before she is open to the public for diving.

We have our reservations to dive it June 6th and 10th. I am really excitied about this trip.
