I just made a couple calls on some equipment in the local Tradin' Post.

One has an 80 cf Luxfer that is a year and a half old that they want $140 for.

The other guy has two 80 cf Catalinas that were last checked in '99. He'll bring them to the dive shop Monday to have them checked and leave them there for me for $140 each also, he says he's sure they're steel....does this sound to good to be true?

I wasn't able to find a steel tank on either one of the manufacturers websites - probably just a wild goose chase.

A brand new AL80, either Luxfer or Catalina, shouldn't cost more than $140.00 - $150.00. A used one should be a lot less. I wouldn't buy a used tank without an agreement that the tank will have to pass a hydro and a visual - that's going to cost about $50.00 per cylinder. Add a discount for the fact that the tank is used and about the most I'd pay for a used aluminum tank might be $50.00. If the tank is in less than pristine condition, particularly inside, the cost of cleaning the tank + hydro + visual inspection makes it essentially worthless.

Neither Catalina nor Luxfer make steel tanks - only aluminum.

For used gear, I use the "half price rule". Like Steve said, you can buy brand new AL 80's for $140 all day long. About the most I would give is $70 if the hydro and vis are current. My 2 $/100.

I'm a "half price" for used duragle goods too. It would obviously be different for other items that outdate sooner. Sounds like a good question for a poll.
