In between the rain drops, me and a few friends made some dives this weekend at beauiful Mermet Springs. Even with all the rain the past week, vis was pretty decent inbetween 40 and 80 foot at the deep end. The shallows was pretty much screwed up, although every once in a while, you might encounter a pocket of vis. The first dive, we decided to try and find the mysterious truck bed at 120 foot. After talking to Glen to find out where to look for this thing, we headed down into the depths. The dive plan was to bottom out, and look for the truck bed. About 100 foot, we determined the vis was really bad at that depth, and decided to do a wall dive instead. We had a nice dive, that ended with a surface swim. One of the guys was diving wet, and sucked his tank down pretty quickly.
Second dive, we decided to do a tour of the circuit. Nothing majorily exciting. Spend an unusual amount of time at the box car for some reason, I guess just for something to do. I guess the highlight for me was seeing a huge turtle right before we got to the petting zoo. It swam away from me, so I know it wasnt a concrete turtle, and I was at 10 foot, so I wasnt narced.
After a good dinner at Willy Jacks, we retired to to the hotel for the evening. Our wet suit diving freind called it a weekend, and headed home. I was up for another dive or 2, but the other guy was a bit chilled. It was a waste of a beautiful 75 degree day, but I am not going to force anyone to dive if they arent feeling up to it.
One heck of a storm came through the wee hours of the morning. We got up at 7 to head back to Mermet, but it was pouring outside, so we slept for another hour or so. We finally arrived at Mermet about 9:30, and that place looked like a tornado had hit it. (After talking to Glen, we arent so sure one didnt.) Table was over turned, canopies over turned, and even their row boat was not parked on the main dock. The blue trash cans could be seen bobbing around in the water, and trees and branched lined the surface as well. But that excellent staff down there was very quick to clean everything up. When we got back from out first dive, everything was already back in order.
Speaking fo that first dive, we tried doing something a little interesting. We wanted to play with narcosis. Down to the 100 foot platform we went. Our goal was to use different lights and see if we can get our selves narced by working, task loading or any other means. I wasnt feeling much, if anything, at 100 foot. I dropped down under the platform and hot about 113, and started to feel it. I tried just hovering, swimming circles, small light on, lights out. After doing our little experiment, I determined I get narced pretty bad in low light, but I couldnt work hard enough to raise my levels. Light or lack of seemed to be the big thing for me. Reading what I just wrote, it sounds pretty lame and boring, but for some reason we both found it fun and entertaining. And thats all that mattered. Just to play it safe, we hung an O2 bottle at 15 foot. My tech computer called for 2 deep stops, but my other computer never hit deco. We did the deep stops anyway, and did a 5 minute stop at 15 sharing the O2.
Second dive, he was getting chilled again, so we just dove the circuit again. But let me be the first to tell you there is a new attraction. I dont want to spoil the surprise, so I wont tell you what it is, but I will tell you it can be found in the pack up the pickup truck next to the 65 foot platform. I am guessing Steve already knows what it is though.
well, thats my report. If you made it this far, I hope you enjoyed it. I plan on going back there again next weekend.
