Looks like this is next on my "to do" list. Hopefully that will be mid to late summer.

Looks like my schedule has been bumped up. I start class on Monday.

What does the class cover?

Gas switching to extend your no stop bottom time, and then is gets into deco stops, accelerated deco and safety measures. Pretty cool stuff.

Gas switching to extend your no stop bottom time
I'm not trying to be a smart a__, but how can you switch gases to extend no stop bottom time. Isn't the bottom time usually done on a single nitox or trimix gas?? Don't most tec dives exceed no stop limits???

multiple gasses. You could have air as your back gas, then switch to a Nitrox mix.

I'm guessing it's describing a typical staged dive, i.e. air deep, 40 percent mid, 60% shallow type of scenario where a hard deco obligation is never reached. I mini-tech dive if you would...
Just a guess.

Quoting the book here...
TEC DEEP DIVER CERTIFICATION
Dive to a max depth of 165 feet using air or enriched air.
Make decompression dives using air, enriched air or oxygen
Make extended no stop dives by switching gases during the dive.

I guess I still don't understand. I thought gas switches were made to reduce deco time, not to increase "no-stop BOTTOM time" If you plan your bottom mix with the richest mix allowed for the PO2 limit, switching gases on the bottom will not increase your no-stop BOTTOM time. If you switch gases for the ascent, you are decreasing your ascent/deco time (or increasing your safety factor), but you have not increased your BOTTOM time. If you leave the bottom, ascend a bit, switch gases, and keep on diving, you are making a multi-level dive on multiple gases, but you have not increased your time on the bottom (I don't think many dives are planned this way). Maybe I'll study up on this.

I'll go out on a limb and guess. On shallower dives, even with doubles one might not be close to NDL's. Add a bottom stage plus back gas and you extend your time while still following gas rules.

My confusion is a little simpler...
What is the relationship between PADI Tec Rec and TEC DEEP DIVER ? Are they the same? I would have thought that the PADI Tec Rec would have been a 130' thing since it is titled Rec.
The thread title was different than the definition posted which causes my question.
Jim
Edit to answer my own post...
Okay, I looked it up at the PADI site...there is no Tec Rec class, that is a program with several classes contained in it and TecDeep Diver is one of the classes. (TecDiver Level One is similar, but limited to 130' and has one less prereq by not requiring Rescue Diver.)
