I might be going to RBD in March. Hubby and I have an anniversay in March and thought a weekend of practicing our newly acquired cavern skills would be a romantic way to celebrate.
I have been to Mine LaMotte. Are there any other spots in the vicinity for cavern diving? We might like to do RBD one day and a different site the next day.

RBD is the only one I know of. Let us know what dates you will be there, and a few of us might be willing to meet up with you there, as long as we arent intrusing on the privacy of the occasion, of course.

Bennett Springs is near Lebanon, MO, and has had good conditions lately. Is a good Cavern dive with max depth of about 100 ft. They limit the number of divers per day, so it is best to contact the park and make reservation.

Conditions and rain can vary that time of year. Check in with us before making that long drive . . . or have a back-up plan of driving a little further to Blue Lake at Oronogo, MO. Blue Lake was a lead mine and has some pretty good cavern dives--there are several areas that were hollowed out of the walls to be used as maintenance garages for the very large mining equipment, and some of them have skylights that you can dive through as well. I plan to dive Blue Lake with JClifton March 4-5 weekend.

Bennet will be closed for diving in March due to the Trouth season opening up March 1st. Keep us all posted on the date. I could maybde make it March 4th to RBD.

Dude! They close for diving so some people can throw lures at fish??!!
That is so WRONG!

Yup, there are some fools I mean people out there that think you have to throw stuff at fish in the cold water. I think it hs somthing to do with all the ones they raise there to help make money for the state. I do agree, what a waist of a flowing spring.
They even stock RBD but not as much.

We would definitely check before driving down. How much further is Blue Lake?

From RBD, Blue Lake is straight out HY 44 W to Joplin, MO, and then about 8 miles north to Oronogo. Approximately 2-1/2 to 3 hours additional driving time.

What he said.
Sounds like a mini-get-together in the making. Mar 11 or 18 (18th best) would work for me. Any thoughts???

Ummm, that is getting into the 10 hour range of drive time. I won't be doing that just for a weekend.

Of course. My point was that if you already made the trip to dive RBD and conditions turned out to be poor, as can easily happen with that system, it would be better (in my opinion) to be prepared to drive an additional couple hours to still get some good diving in rather than turn around and go back home bubbleless.
I've had to scrub dives at RBD on arrival on several occasions, but have always still made a weekend out of it by driving on to Oronogo or Table Rock Lake, and once even settled for Rolla (not a bad dive site for a single trip if you haven't already been there so many times teaching classes that you have already seen every single fish and rock in the quarry).

Man what a bummer. Sounds like I might not get to make it. March 4th is the only day I could do it.

They may decide to go on Mar 4; it's hard to find a date that's good for everyone.

I don't think I'll be going on the 4th. Our shop has a trip to Bonne Terre Mines that weekend. I will probably work while they go get gouged for diving. One of the other weekends though.

Well I think I will just kind of hijack this thread and say who wants to go to RBD March 4th?

Jason and I have plans for Oronogo that weekend. But if RBD conditions are favorable that week we might be persuaded to change our plans. Gots to get our money's worth out of those RBD season passes we bought.

If I'm in town, and conditions are favorable, and if I'm invited, I'm in. That should give me a good opportunity to break in my full cave cert I plan on picking up next month.

Lets just plan on it RBD March 4th, DDB- just think it could be your first dive after your full cave and be a start towrds your ABE. Unless you get a few dives in after class.
March 4th anyone that can dive in Overhead from Cavern-Full Cave is invited.

I did get one dive in after class...we saw a little bit of the lower tunnel in Orange Grove before realizing we went in the wrong tunnel, went out, and then went in to the correct tunnel. Still had a good dive anyway. I guess 99 more to go, and 9 more different systems.
