Me and my dive buddy made a trip to RBD today. Beautiful weather, lower 70's. The dive was pretty nice too. I dont remember seeing that many fish last time I was down there. There was so many, it was almost intimidating. Vis was about 25 foot. Since we are only intro level cave divers, we only did a straight penetration, went back about 500 foot, maybe a tad more. When we hit the 70 foot stage area, we turned the dive and came back. We got about 30 minutes of cave time in. It was a really good dive. We was getting ready to do the second dive, when my buddys back started acting up on him, and I made the call to not push it, and call it a day. I would have like to have done another dive or two, but I like to be cautious. Besides that, when we was standing around my truck after the first dive, we witnessed some punks throwing rocks down from up high on the cliff. That didnt make me feel too safe either. I've heard the stories, and now I have witnessed it too. As alway, I am looking forward to my next adventure into the over head environment.

Quick question for you...when we hit the 70 foot mark, it almost seemed like there was a thermocline there. It didnt feel like it, but it looked like it. Have you ever seen that? Any idea what causes that?

I have never seen that. And have no good guess as to why it would appear.

That thermocline that you think you saw but did not feel could be due to many things. I could not say what since I wsa not there but have seen it look like muddy water was on the way and that since the floor copostion wsa differnat and the walls were differnt that the way light reflects changed. Wish I could help but since I was not there I can not say.

That could be it. It looked like a low level cloud hanging out there. Anyway, it was kind of cool to see.
