I watched this little bit of Hollywood fantasy last night. Totally unrealistic, don't have to be a cave diver to figure that out:

1. Evidently you no longer need an FFM for underwater comms, a plain double hose reg will do.
2. Nifty little handheld sonic mapper. Press a button and you have the entire layout of the cave in front of you on a screen. Works above and below the water.
3. Divers slipping out of their tanks, swimming 10feet through a tight squeeze, mapping the larger cave with #2, looking around, twiddleing thumbs, squeezing their way back out, all on a breath hold.
4. Rebreather the size of a breifcase that allow you to stay down 24 hours.
5. No need for stage bottles with #4.
6. Rambo, meets Indiana Jones, meets Top Gun, meets cave diving.
7. Allowing a DPV to run into a wall causes an explosion.
8. Said explosion and the resulting cave in, do not disturb the sediment.
9. Etc, etc.

Basicly, the most belivable thing in the movie is the subteranian parasite that turns humans into flying amphibians with huge claws that see via echolocation.

Ahh well, at least there was some cool scenery...

Very much a joke as a cave diving movie . . .

and yet I loved it as a sci-fi horror movie!!!

And indeed some great scenery. Uh, were you referring to the natural beauty of the Mexican cave in which much of it was filmed? or to the hot female co-stars of the movie? Either way, I agree.

I'll watch it again. And I don't think you spoiled any of the rather thin plot with your comments.

And on the positive side as a cave diving movie--the majority of the actual diving in the movie was done by some of the world's best cave divers, and there are a couple inside jokes for those who know their cave diving history and personalities. A great article was written about the making of the movie in the NSS-CDS journal.

Yes.

When you watch the DVD version, be sure to watch the bonus "Into The Cave" which is a nice little ad for Karst Productions. It's a much more interesting view from the diving standpoint with some nice safety messages. I espectially liked the iceburg dive.
