Hello all! I recognize several of you and have already talked to some of you and thought maybe I should make my presence known here in the Intros.

I'm heading to Cozumel in one week for my very first taste of salt water (figuratively speaking hopefully) and very excited about it! From what I hear I may just decide to stay and become a beach (dive) bum!

Well, greetings to all and I'm sure I will be talking with many of you in the future!

Welcome to the board Mike.

Cozumel is very addictive. Be sure to stop in at Casa Denis to eat and rent a car for an afternoon to go bar hopping on the east side of the island.

Where you staying & who are you diving with?

welcome Mike

by the way, you cant come home from Cozumel until you have found a Splendid Toadfish on your own. That is your mission.

Mike -

First welcome!! and 2nd I will be very disappointed if you don't at least think about the Beach Bum job. :) Cozumel is a great place, diving, food, drink, weather (especially considering it is 14 here right now), and sleeping if you must. Can't wait to hear what you think.

Thanks!

I hope to see as much of Cozumel as I can (when I'm not checking it out under water)! I'll definitely try and make it to Casa Denis time permitting of course, as we all know time

I'm going with the Aquasports Dive Shop out of Springfield, we will be staying and diving out of Scuba Club Cozumel, I've heard a lot of good things about it and one or two not so good but I'll get the opportunity to develop my own opinion soon!

Hi Becky, and thanks!

Rest assured, the "thinking" part is well under way and has been for some time! Now the finances on the other hand, that might be another matter, of course if I find the right seniorita maybe I can live off love, think? :D I plan on getting by on the bare minimum of sleep, they're be plenty of time for that when (if) I get back, right? I'll be sure and post a trip report when I get back!

Guilty as charged. A lot of people like it, but I'll take Caribe Blu over it any day. The one good thing I can say is the DM's are good. We had "Free Willy" when we stayed there. He could sit motionless in the current, which was pretty amazing.

Mike, if you get a chance try a shore night dive from Scuba Club. We stayed @ Hotel Cozumel (next door to Scuba Club) & did a couple night dives from shore there, saw almost as many critters as we did on the night dive off the boat.

We didn't get a chance to try this but....If you take a taxi with all your gear south to the light house, enter there, you should be able to drift back to Scuba Club easily, unless the current has changed from South to North. If the current has changed....well, there are other resort piers to grab on to. ha

That's a fact. There is a wall (shoreline wall) right in front of SCC that is covered with some kind of wavy coral or somthing. That stuff is so full of eels it's funny. Also saw a lot of octo's there. Caribe Blu is also a good shoredive. It's different from SCC and has some great little plants for seahorses:

I have actually heard of a story where some guys from my LDS were diving there, and started out against the current like you are suppose to, and when they reached their turn around point, the current changed and they was fighting the current to get back too. I guess it can be tricky.

Shore dives from SSC are really cool, especially at night. The trick is to avoid all the sea urchins that gather on the wall leading to the hole where you get in. On night dives from SCC, we saw lots of octopus and even two squid. During the day we saw a puffer fish about the size of three footballs put together. And like James mentioned, the eels that are on the wall are endless.

Watch out for them at the latter when you exit too. I got thrown into one by the surge while I was waiting for my wife to climb up.

Terry,

According to our dive guide we will definitely be doing the night dive from the lighthouse, he has made it before and like you, apparently was very impressed by it! We will also be doing as many shore dives as we can work in when we aren't on the boats and at least a couple of night dives so hopefully I will come back with very wrinkled skin! Thanks for the info, all tips and suggestions are very much welcomed!

Thanks for the warnings on the sea urchins, I've heard others say the same thing, apparently it is a rather unpleasant experience "running into" one of them, one I would just as soon not experience!

Actually it wasn't that bad. I put some vinegar on it and all I had was a bit of mild irritation for a couple of hours. Less pain than a bee sting.

Thanks for the info on the vinegar, you answered that question before I asked it! Can they sting through a wetsuit, say a 3 mil? A friend said he was stung by one and it bothered him for a couple of days!

Vinegar dissolves the spines. Mine was in the arm and only penetrated about a quarter of an inch. And yes, they can pentrate a wetsuit.
